Pre-match review
Round 36 of the Premier League witnessed an extremely important confrontation at St James' Park, when Newcastle welcomed Chelsea - two teams that are equal on points and directly competing for a place in the Champions League next season.
Before the match, Newcastle ranked 4th on the rankings with 63 points, equal to Chelsea (5th) but ranked higher thanks to the additional index. In the context of Arsenal's decline and Man City's uncertain position, the "Magpies" still have a chance to break away, but at the same time, they also face the risk of falling out of the top 5 when Nottingham Forest (61 points - 6th) and Aston Villa (60 points - 7th) are close behind.
Newcastle's recent form has been somewhat shaky, dropping points in two of the last three matches. That was a 1-4 defeat to Aston Villa and a 1-1 draw against Brighton. However, at the "holy land" of St James' Park, coach Eddie Howe's team showed impressive strength: winning all five of their last matches, scoring at least three goals per match against Man United, Crystal Palace, Ipswich and Nottingham Forest.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are rediscovering their form under Enzo Maresca. After a long slump after Christmas, the Blues have won three Premier League games in a row – their second-longest winning streak of the season. The 3-1 win over Liverpool in Round 35 was a clear sign of their revival, with Cole Palmer making a big impact. With 15 goals this season, he is on course to score in his second consecutive Premier League game since January.
Chelsea have now won five games in a row in all competitions, starting with a comeback win over Fulham. It was their first away win since December, ending an eight-game winless run away from home (L5, Failed to Score in 5).
However, Chelsea still need to prove more, especially in big away matches, if they do not want to lose their place in the Champions League after 2 seasons of absence.
Form, head-to-head history
In the last 5 matches, Newcastle won 3, drew 1 and lost 1. This number for Chelsea is 5 wins.
However, Newcastle have won seven of their last 11 home games against Chelsea, eliminating them in the fourth round of the League Cup this season. Eddie Howe has also won all three of his home games against Chelsea at St James' Park, with an aggregate score of 7-1.
Force situation
Newcastle continue to be without captain Jamaal Lascelles, Lewis Hall and Joelinton due to injury. Fabian Schar is doubtful.
For Chelsea, Wesley Fofana and Aaron Anselmino are out long-term, while Romeo Lavia is back but still needs monitoring.
Newcastle : Pope; Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento; Guimaraes, Tonali, Willock; Murphy, Isak, Gordon
Chelsea : Sanchez; Caicedo, Chalobah, Colwill, Cucurella; Lavia, Fernandez; Neto, Palmer, Madueke; Jackson
Score prediction: Newcastle 2-1 Chelsea
