Recently, the gastrointestinal endoscopy department of the 108 Military Central Hospital received a 38-year-old male patient transferred from Bac Quang District Hospital, Ha Giang . For the past two weeks, the patient has had abdominal pain and indigestion. A gastroscopy at the previous level found a foreign object that was food residue but could not be removed.
The patient came to the department with severe abdominal pain and vomiting. The endoscopy showed a foreign body mass of thick, yellow, black food residue in the stomach cavity, restricting circulation.
Immediately, the team proceeded to cut the food mass into small pieces using an endoscope. Fortunately, the patient was detected early so the foreign object did not cause complications such as ulcers or stomach bleeding. After the intervention, the patient was stable and was instructed to monitor at home.
Medical history revealed that the patient had recently eaten large amounts of homegrown figs with honey over a long period of time, especially when hungry.
According to doctors, figs are one of the fruits rich in fiber. Consuming large amounts of foods rich in fiber and tannin such as persimmons, guavas, figs, and bamboo shoots can be one of the risks of forming food residue during digestion.
In particular, if eaten when hungry, the stomach is still empty, they easily precipitate, causing the plant fibers to stick together, forming a solid mass that gradually grows larger over time, causing symptoms for the patient such as bloating, indigestion, abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, gastrointestinal bleeding due to ulcers at the site of pressure and friction, intestinal obstruction...
Doctors recommend that people should limit the use of foods containing a lot of fiber and tannin, especially not eat when hungry, eat slowly, chew thoroughly and drink lots of water.
If you experience stomach pain or nausea after accidentally swallowing large pieces of food or eating sticky substances, you should go to a reputable medical facility to promptly detect foreign food objects and avoid complications.
Nutritionists recommend that each person's fiber tolerance will be different because for each age, the amount of nutrients that need to be absorbed into the body will be different.
Elderly people need to increase their fiber intake due to poor bowel movements, but do not overdo it as consuming too much can also be harmful.
It should be noted that the body should not be in a state of excess fiber. Because excess fiber will significantly reduce the ability to absorb vitamins and minerals. If you eat more than the recommended amount or increase the amount of fiber too suddenly, you may experience some side effects.
