On September 23, the National Children's Hospital said that recently the hospital has received emergency treatment for many children who were stung by bees and were in very critical condition.
Among them, patient NL (10 years old, in Hai Duong) died of multiple organ failure. NL's family said that he was stung by a wasp on his way to school, with more than 100 stings all over his body. NL was taken to a medical facility by his family to receive IV fluids, painkillers, and anti-allergy medication.
At this time, the child was tired and had difficulty breathing, so he was transferred to the National Children's Hospital for further treatment in a state of respiratory failure, acute pulmonary edema, circulatory failure, and rapidly progressing blood clotting disorder.
Despite being put on a ventilator, continuous blood filtration and toxin adsorption blood filtration, the child's multiple organ failure continued to worsen, and his circulatory failure became more severe. The doctors consulted and decided to perform ECMO (artificial heart-lung) to support the functions of his organs, in order to maintain his life. Unfortunately, after 2 days, the child died in a state of multiple organ failure, severe blood clotting disorder, and did not respond to treatment.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Ta Anh Tuan, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine Intensive Care, bee stings are common accidents in children, especially children living in rural areas. Depending on the species of bee, the venom will be more or less toxic, some are almost non-toxic (honey bees) but there are also types that can cause death with just 10 stings such as: hornets, wasps and hornets.
