WATCH CLIP:

On the morning of November 22, the area around Ha Huy Tap High School in the "flood center" of West Nha Trang was still submerged in mud and water after 5 days of historic flooding. Located in a low-lying area, the school has been flooded more than 2 meters deep in the past few days, many facilities are damaged, and garbage is floating around.

Snail eggs are found on many wall columns after 5 days of deep flooding.

As the water receded, mud and dirt remained thickly piled up. Teachers and students of Ha Huy Tap High School began cleaning up early this morning to quickly return to school.

Since 7am, 25 teachers have been present at the school to start the clean-up work after the flood. Principal Nguyen Thi Lien Huong said that as soon as the heavy rain forecast was received, the school proactively moved important equipment and supplies to the second floor.

However, due to the deep water for many days, many items are still severely damaged, especially the school gate and the system of tables and chairs. “We are making efforts to fix it so that students can return to class soon,” Ms. Huong said.
The school also received support from Ton Duc Thang University branch in Nha Trang and Khanh Hoa province police force in cleaning up and repairing affected areas.

Flood water levels are still visible on the walls of the teachers' meeting room.

The teachers’ first job was to clear the thick layer of mud that covered the yard and classrooms. “We had to clean it up quickly because once the mud dries, it’s very difficult to handle,” said Math teacher Pham Thi Anh Tuyet.

According to Ms. Tuyet, the Board of Directors had notified in advance so teachers had prepared quite a lot of equipment: boots, medical gloves, brooms, raincoats, masks... to avoid scratches and ensure safety while working. Because of experience from previous floods, teachers also tried to take turns to both clean up the workplace and take care of family affairs.

Ms. Tran Thi Thi Vui had to carry water from the yard to wash away the mud in the classrooms.

The teachers cleaned up the mud in the meeting room.

During cleaning, all windows are opened to reduce odors and help air out the classroom.

Also this morning, nearly a dozen students from Ton Duc Thang University’s Nha Trang branch were present to assist in the cleanup. These students are all from outside the flood zone and have actively registered to participate.
Mr. Nguyen Hong Tien, in charge of the Training Department, said the school hopes to coordinate with affected facilities to speed up the recovery process and soon stabilize teaching and learning.

The school is expected to resume teaching and learning next week.
