A group of first-year students majoring in logistics technology at the University of Economics , Ho Chi Minh City, took only about 10 days to complete an automatic payment system using artificial intelligence (AI). The group includes: Nguyen Quoc Bao (team leader), Nguyen Viet Thanh and Le Cao Xuan Mai.
Team leader Quoc Bao said this project aims to optimize the payment process at restaurants and canteens, thereby significantly reducing customer waiting time.
With the automatic payment system, customers only take 3-5 seconds to pay.
After selecting the food, the customer places the tray in front of the camera for automatic scanning. Within 3-5 seconds, the display screen will list the full list of selected dishes, along with quantity, unit price and total amount to be paid.
The system will automatically generate a unique QR code for each bill. Customers just need to use the banking application or e-wallet on their smartphone to scan this code.
"All transactions are carefully stored in history, with timestamps, making it easy to look up when needed. In addition, the system also provides the option to print physical invoices, serving the needs of expense management or accounting operations" - Bao added.
To realize this idea, Bao was in charge of the main code for the interface, while the other two members focused on searching for food data and writing reports.
"The project applies advanced technologies such as Yolo V8 and CNN Resnet V50 in image recognition. Before being widely known, this product was successfully tested at school-level competitions and achieved certain achievements" - Bao shared.

Team leader Quoc Bao introduces the AI-integrated payment system researched by the team.
Professor Nguyen Truong Thinh, Director of the Institute of Intelligent and Interactive Technology - Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, said that the school strongly encourages students to carry out start-up research projects with simple, effective, low-cost solutions to serve social needs, especially small and medium-sized enterprises or households.
"Nurturing a successful research project is not easy, but certainly, each project brings great "profits" to students. Right from the first year, students are inspired with passion, equipped with a solid foundation of knowledge and practical skills. By the second year, they can focus on advanced knowledge, go on field trips, expand relationships and be ready to collide with the profession" - Professor Thinh affirmed.
