The most exciting Christmas markets in the world in 2023

The event of Christmas markets originally originated in Vienna, Austria, with the first recorded December market in 1298. Today, the tradition of Christmas markets has spread all over the world . Some of the markets have even become famous tourist attractions.

Vienna Christkindlmarkt (Austria)

Although there are about 20 Christmas markets in the Austrian capital Vienna, the Wiener Christkindlmarkt is one of the oldest and most traditional.

Held in front of the City Hall, the event is also known as Vienna’s Dream Christmas Market, with reindeer rides, a giant Ferris wheel and a classic setting that brings out the festive spirit. There is also a 150-square-meter ice rink for children and a giant maple tree decorated with hundreds of sparkling hearts.

The fair also includes many stalls offering delicious food such as Austrian sausages, gingerbread cookies and homemade Christmas punch. The fair runs from November 10 to December 26.

Basel Christmas Market (Switzerland)

Most towns in Switzerland will be holding festive fairs at this time of year but the Basel Christmas market is still the country's biggest.

The fair is divided into two different areas, with over 150 stalls decorated with festive decorations and candles, creating a sense of excitement for visitors. Family-friendly attractions include the fairy forest at Munsterplatz, which features activities such as gingerbread decorating, candle making, star workshops and a festive train ride.

Visitors can also walk up the stairs of St. Martin's Tower and enjoy the amazing view of the lights illuminating the old town.

Strasbourg Christmas Fair (France)

This is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe, dating back to 1570. The market is spread over more than 10 sites, three of which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Grande Île.

It attracts over two million tourists every year, with Place Klebe perhaps the most famous thanks to its giant Christmas tree display.

Winter Wonders of Brussels (Belgium)

Brussels comes alive and sparkles every Christmas thanks to the Winter Wonders festival. This is one of the biggest and most famous events in Belgium.

The festival includes many interesting activities such as sound and light shows, ice skating rinks, horseback riding activities. Visitors can also stroll around 200 typical wooden houses, be served Belgian beer, waffles and admire the giant Christmas tree erected at the Grand Place.

Advent in Zagreb (Croatia)

In the online poll on the travel portal Europe's Best Destinations, Zagreb has been rated the best Christmas fair destination for three years in a row.

Advent in Zagreb is made up of 25 Christmas markets spread across the Croatian capital. They feature ice sculptures, outdoor shows, bars and Christmas trams with Santa Claus and his elves.

In addition, the fair also has a separate area for dancers, while visitors will eat street food and enjoy entertainment.

Tallinn Christmas Market (Estonia)

The annual festival in the capital of Estonia is one of the modern European Christmas markets. It takes place inside Tallinn's Town Hall Square. It offers a wide range of traditional Estonian food , artisanal breads and handicrafts.

On the entertainment side, the Christmas fair is also famous for its carousel, winter grotto and Santa Claus riding his sleigh with reindeer. Performances by dance troupes and choirs are also highlights of the holiday here.

Christmas at Tivoli, Copenhagen (Denmark)

Rumored to be the inspiration for Disneyland, this Danish amusement park and garden is a great place to visit any time of year. Tivoli Gardens is especially enchanting during the festival season.

With over 1,000 Christmas trees decorated throughout the grounds, along with unique fairground rides, this will be a festive experience unlike anywhere else in the world.

Winter open-air markets have long been associated with Germany, and the European country is home to some of the oldest and most visited fairs.

Gendarmenmark is famous at Christmas with a maze of wooden stalls selling famous bratwurst, mulled wine and gingerbread, along with unique Christmas gifts. At night, visitors can enjoy lively concerts.

During Christmas, about 200 stalls are set up in the city's central square, and the whole area becomes extremely splendid and crowded. This place also attracts about 2 million tourists every year.
