Mysterious disappearances in the place known as the most terrifying 'Devil's Triangle' in Russia

In the 18th century, on the banks of the Tosno River, about 40 km from St. Petersburg, many quartz sand mines appeared. They were increasingly expanded to serve the Imperial Glassworks.

By 1922, as the St. Petersburg construction boom cooled, the sand of the Tosno River had been mined to the point where it was no longer profitable. Kilometers of riverside sand mines were abandoned. Over the decades, groundwater eroded the sand, changing the topography.

From there, the cave labyrinth known as Russia's "Devil's Triangle" was born. That is the Sablino Cave labyrinth with entrances spread across 14 riverside caves.

Locals have given Sablino many different nicknames such as “meat grinder”, “fly swatter”, “guillotine”… But the most famous title of Sablino is “tram” because many people say that when entering this maze, they always have the same feeling as being stuck in a tram car during rush hour.

According to some documents, from 1982 to 1984, about 300 people lived in the tunnels in the Sablino Cave labyrinth, Russia. They were people dissatisfied with life, gangs, thugs and even random people who discovered that life underground was like a game.

Mysterious disappearances have been reported, and the Sablino Caves have been likened to the Russian version of the Bermuda Triangle. People keep disappearing without a trace, according to Alexei Gurevich, a member of one of the cave-dwelling groups called the Pilgrims. At first, the disappearances were blamed on the police or intelligence, but it soon became clear that someone else was involved. When the leader of one group disappeared, rumors spread around the caves about some dark force. “What it is, I don’t know,” Alexei Gurevich said.

Authorities have been unable to locate the missing people and the cases remain unsolved.

From here, a hypothesis was put forward that inside the Sablino Cave labyrinth there is a time hole. People accidentally enter this hole and end up in another world . Many other hypotheses also say that the mysterious disappearances here may be caused by supernatural phenomena, monsters, or even aliens.

Archaeologists believe that people lost in Sablino encountered underground "quicksand" or fell into "sandy swamps". However, the explanation for the disappearances that the victims were sucked into pits of wet, sticky sand is considered unconvincing.

Today, the Sablino Caves are an adventurous experience, organized for the “hard-hearted” on occasions such as New Year’s Eve, Halloween or Friday the 13th. They only sell entrance tickets to the caves located on the left bank of the Tosno River to ensure the safety of visitors.
