13 years of carrying letters to every home

Born and raised in a Tay ethnic family in Lang Son province with very difficult economic conditions, after graduating from high school, Nong Thi Tham passed the entrance exam to Tay Bac University. After graduating, Tham followed her relatives to apply for a job at the Department of Education, Dak Glong district. By the end of 2010, Tham was recruited as a civil servant and assigned to teach history at Quang Hoa Secondary School.

After more than 13 years of working with the school, the class and the students in this sunny and windy land, the once shy Tay girl has now become one of the teachers with many achievements and is loved by parents, cherished by students as well as highly appreciated by the school leaders and the Department of Education.

Talking to us, Ms. Nong Thi Tham could not hold back her tears as she recounted her first days working at a school that lacked many things and had extremely difficult transportation.

More than 10 years ago, the school was still makeshift, the students did not have stable housing, the road to school was slippery, some even had to walk through the forest for half a day to get to class. Many students were forced to put their studies on hold. "There were students who were being tutored by me for the provincial excellent student exam, but they came to see me and asked me to take a leave of absence so they could go home and help their parents work for hire. It was so heartbreaking to hear that," Ms. Tham recalled.

According to Ms. Tham, more than 90% of the students at Quang Hoa Secondary School are ethnic minorities from the northern provinces such as Tay, Nung, Mong, Giao... who migrated here to live. Previously, most of them lived in scattered areas near the edge of the forest, combined with child marriage, so every year many children had to drop out of school. However, with the enthusiasm of youth and love of letters, Ms. Nong Thi Tham and other teachers did not hesitate to face the difficulties and hardships of many years of trekking through forests and wading through streams to knock on each house door, both mobilizing and teaching the children to read and write.

Send love in every word

With a love for children and considering teaching as a career, Ms. Tham, like many other teachers, has tried to support the transfer of knowledge from books to reality. From there, helping children have the best conditions to study and develop. Among them, many children have risen to become shining examples of learning, achieving many high achievements, creating motivation for their peers to follow.

Typically, Lau Thuy Huong was directly taught and trained by teacher Nong Thi Tham, won third prize at the provincial history competition for excellent students in 2021-2022 and received a Certificate of Merit from the Chairman of Dak Nong Provincial People's Committee. Currently, she is studying in grade 11 at Nguyen Chi Thanh High School in Dak Lak.

“Every year, when the students I nurture and teach win prizes in competitions for excellent students, or just make progress compared to yesterday, I feel very happy and proud. However, the greatest wish of a teacher like us is that our students will always go to school confidently so that in the future they will have less hardship and contribute a small part to building a more beautiful society,” Ms. Tham confided.

Thanks to the attention of the Party, the State, local authorities and benefactors, the learning of students here has had quite big changes.

According to Mr. Le Luong Nhien - Principal of Quang Hoa Secondary School, Dak Dak Glong District, Ms. Nong Thi Tham, currently the head teacher of class 9A at the school, is one of the teachers with very good teaching achievements with many consecutive years of students winning excellent student awards at the provincial and district levels. This is also the pride of the school and the district's education sector.

“It can be said that most of the teachers who come to teach at this school have difficult economic conditions, coming from the North to start a career, combined with a lack of teaching conditions and seriously degraded roads… However, their love for letters has kept the teachers and helped the students gain more knowledge for a brighter tomorrow.” Mr. Nhien shared more.

According to Mr. Nhien, in recent years, with the attention of the Party, the State, local authorities and benefactors, the learning, accommodation and travel conditions of a number of students have also changed. The rate of students dropping out of school has decreased significantly, and learning outcomes have improved day by day. However, in reality, compared to the general needs of the education sector, there are still countless difficulties.

Currently, the school has 14 classes with 600 students. Of which, the proportion of ethnic minority students accounts for 97%. However, there are only 28 teachers and there is a lack of school supplies, so it cannot meet the needs of students' practical learning and research.

This is the common concern of many teachers who are teaching at schools in remote areas, ethnic minority areas. Overcoming these difficulties, teachers have made many efforts to light up the dreams of children in border areas, remote areas, ethnic minority areas.
