At a press conference held at the headquarters of the US Permanent Mission in New York, in response to a question from a VNA reporter in New York, Deputy Agriculture Minister Luke Lindberg said that US farmers are excited about the prospect of further access to new markets in Vietnam. According to Mr. Lindberg, Vietnam is one of the largest agricultural exporters to the US. However, current tariffs are becoming a barrier to import-export activities from both sides.

Regarding the possibility of Washington lowering import tariffs on Vietnamese agricultural products in the near future, Deputy Minister Lindberg confirmed that the US and Vietnam have agreed on a framework agreement. The Trump administration and negotiators are actively negotiating a more detailed and comprehensive agreement. Mr. Lindberg believes that further access of US agricultural products to the Vietnamese market will contribute to rebalancing the trade relationship between the two countries.

In a related statement, Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins announced that the US will continue to prioritize supporting emerging and developing economies to modernize their agricultural sectors and transition to market-oriented growth, through USDA technical assistance programs such as Food for Progress, McGovern Dole or Export Credit Guarantees... According to Ms. Rollins, these programs are helping to promote efforts to improve productivity, develop value chains and expand trade links, notably the achievements in Kenya, Ethiopia and Vietnam.

At the roundtable discussion that followed, Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Nguyen - Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations (UN) - said that agricultural cooperation remains one of the most important pillars of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the US. Vietnam wishes to strengthen substantive cooperation with the US based on common interests, sustainability and transparency.

The Vietnamese representative acknowledged the US leadership in this area, supported many multilateral initiatives previously led by Washington, and was ready to support new US initiatives, especially within the UN framework, to promote food security, economic growth, fair trade, and environmental resilience. Vietnam appreciated being considered a priority country in the Food for Progress Program and hoped to continue cooperation under this program.

Chargé d'Affaires Nguyen Hoang Nguyen stressed that Vietnam also wishes to continue dialogue to find ways to review tariff levels to create a more favorable and mutually beneficial trade environment.
