How has your life been lately?
- I find my current life leisurely and comfortable. First of all, I am very happy because my children have gone to university, my husband and I no longer have to work hard and take care of them like before. I am also retired so I feel completely free and independent.
Before, I had to work from morning to night to take care of the house and work. Now, I spend all my time with my family. I feel like I live a leisurely life, without many worries.
My day goes by peacefully. In the morning I read the newspaper, have breakfast, drink coffee, then go home to do this and that. There was a time when my family had up to 4 maids to help with housework and cooking. But now, I don't need them anymore. Every day I clean the house myself.

No longer teaching or performing like before, how does Meritorious Artist Duc Hai manage his finances ?
- My main income is mainly my pension. In addition, I am a person who knows how to save, has a relatively standard strategy and vision, so I do not have too much trouble. In addition to my pension, I also have real estate, houses and hotels for rent in the center of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. My passive income sources are at least 100 million VND per month.
Some artists used to earn a lot of money but they didn't know how to save it, so when they got old they were poor. I foresaw that, so my current life is quite full, I don't have to worry about finances and trivial things. I still ensure my family has a comfortable life, take care of my children studying abroad, from entertainment, shopping to traveling...
However, the cost of investing in the education of 4 children is certainly not small?
- I am still the main breadwinner of the family, my wife also has her own source of income. I am not afraid to invest in issues related to the care and development of my children. I am willing to send my children to study abroad, learn foreign languages and even play the piano.
My children's living and education expenses are not small, but I don't feel burdened or pressured by them. My eldest daughter is studying abroad in Australia. The day before, she informed me about paying her tuition fees. I didn't have to think much and transferred 300 million VND into her account.
The other three children live with me and are studying in Ho Chi Minh City. They want to study in Vietnam first, not abroad.

You have been absent for a long time, how is your attitude towards art?
- I still miss my job, but my mindset has changed. I feel like I've passed the stage where I had to work hard to earn money, stay up late and wake up early to perform and run shows. I think, if I keep doing this, when will I stop? Now I'm getting old, my health is also limited, so I can't "stay up late and wake up early" and work as hard as before.
Does Duc Hai still receive many invitations to participate in art projects like before?
- Many people offered to act in movies and be an MC, but I refused. At this age, I am more selective about art projects than before. If there is a suitable role or script, I will accept it, but if I feel it is not suitable, I will refuse. When I was young, I had to build my brand and go out of my way to ask for roles, but now it is different.
Once active, now retired to a peaceful life with family, does this make you feel empty?
- About 10 days after retirement, I felt quite empty and bored, because I was not used to such an idle life. However, after 10 days, I began to adapt and move my life to a new page. I realized that I had more advantages in terms of time and was proactive in doing what I loved.
Thanks to those moments at home, I realized that I was very selfish in the past because I was always pursuing my passion and personal interests without caring about my family and children. Now, I feel very happy and joyful because I have more time to be close to and accompany my children.

Not participating in as many artistic activities as before, how do you connect with your colleagues?
- I still meet my colleagues of the same age regularly. For example, I often meet artist Chi Trung every time I go to Hanoi.
Occasionally, I meet my juniors in the profession. Seeing them busy, running shows continuously, I remember my old image. Maybe we meet less often now, but the feelings between colleagues, teachers and students are always full and happy.
So how is your connection with the audience at the moment?
- I am very happy that the audience still remembers and has a lot of affection for me. If we accidentally meet outside, they still recognize me and eagerly ask to take a photo together. I am happy because they always open their arms to hug me, that is also a great motivation for me in my old age.
Away from the stage, do you often follow the activities of artists?
- Up until now, I have never cared about artists' private lives, never interfered in colleagues' private lives or had an opinion about anything.
As for art programs, I still update and follow impressive content. However, my mindset is only to watch for entertainment, not for the purpose of finding opportunities or learning like before.

What is your current joy?
- My current joy is taking care of the house, cooking and learning about cuisine. From a "very low level" cook, I feel like I have become a "star" in the culinary world. I love cooking new dishes and hearing my children comment on my talents. Every day, I learn to cook new dishes.
In addition, I also learn foreign languages every day. I can speak Chinese, French and Russian. I find that learning foreign languages helps me train my memory and reflexes very well.
Besides, I also want my children to see that even though I am old, I still keep learning and improving myself. My family also often learns Chinese together.

How do your wife and children share with you in your current life?
- I am lucky and grateful to have my children's mother who is always supportive and encouraging in life. She also has 4 university degrees in law, English language, financial accounting and pharmacy.
She is very good at taking care of and educating her children. She always tells her children to learn to "suffer first, enjoy later".
My four children have also entered university, have a talent for playing the piano and have equipped themselves with both English and Chinese, so I feel very secure.
Thanks for sharing Meritorious Artist Duc Hai!
