Meritorious Artist Ngoc Trinh

On the afternoon of September 1, the Vietnamese theater and cinema world was shocked to hear that Meritorious Artist Ngoc Trinh (real name Pham Thi Ngoc Trinh) breathed her last at noon that same day, a week after being taken to the emergency room by her family. Ngoc Trinh was hospitalized for treatment of gastric hemorrhage at Gia Dinh People's Hospital.

Ngoc Trinh has been treated for gastric bleeding for many years. 10 days ago she felt tired, then had a stroke so her family took her to the hospital.

Despite the dedicated treatment of the medical team, she did not survive, passing away at the age of 52 - too young for an artist in the prime of her career with many unfinished plans.

Ngoc Trinh and the arduous path of art

Born on May 25, 1974, Ngoc Trinh was passionate about reformed opera since childhood, idolized artists Tai Linh and Ngoc Huyen and dreamed of becoming a princess or a lady on stage. But fate led her to drama when she entered the School of Stage Arts II (now the University of Stage and Cinema, Ho Chi Minh City) in 1994.

In the early days, Ngoc Trinh was discouraged when the theater troupe disbanded right after she graduated. But she persevered to find new opportunities at the theaters 135 Hai Ba Trung and 5B Vo Van Tan. The role of Bich Hong in the play "Our House" directed by People's Artist Hong Van opened a new path for Ngoc Trinh, and she continuously reaped awards from 1998 - 1999.

Ngoc Trinh has appeared on many large and small stages: IDECAF, Tran Cao Van, The Gioi Tre ..., where she tried her hand at many types of roles.

The role of Be Ba in the play "Doi Nhu Y" by director Bui Quoc Bao became a brilliant highlight, bringing her the Gold Medal at the National Professional Theater Festival in 2012.

Ngoc Trinh with her mark on the screen

Television audiences know Ngoc Trinh best through her role as Vy in the long-running series "The Scent of Coriander" (2006). Although there was a time when she was criticized for her unsuitable appearance, it was her perseverance and emotional acting that turned Vy into the role of a lifetime.

Unfortunately, stomach illness forced Ngoc Trinh to stop after the first two parts of the film, leaving great regret.

On stage, she also conquered the audience with her graceful and profound acting, especially in the role of Xang in the play "Dancing Heart", which brought her the Mai Vang Award in 2007 for Comedian and in 2014, she won the Mai Vang Award for stage director, successfully staging the play "49 Days of Love".

Ngoc Trinh is versatile and dedicated

Not only stopping at the role of an actress, Ngoc Trinh also ventured into being a director, show producer, script translator, MC, and even organized a 3D painting exhibition in Vietnam with her ex-husband - director Kim Se Hyuk.

She once founded a social drama group performing at the Ho Chi Minh City Drama Theater with plays such as: "The amorous liar", "49 days of love", "Only love"...

With more than 20 years of dedication, in 2019, she was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist, a worthy recognition for an artist who constantly strives to explore and discover.

Besides, Ngoc Trinh is dedicated to training. She is a lecturer at Van Lang University, and also a guest lecturer at the University of Theater and Cinema in Ho Chi Minh City and many actor training centers. The image of a dedicated, witty teacher, close to her students is something that many generations of students still remember.

Ngoc Trinh - a private life with many ups and downs

Meritorious Artist Ngoc Trinh was once married to director Kim Se Hyuk – a partner she met while filming the movie "The Scent of Coriander". Although they were together for 9 years, they broke up regretfully. After the breakup, she chose to live a single life, quietly dedicating herself to art and teaching.

On her personal page, Ngoc Trinh often shares optimistic and youthful images, loved by the audience for her youthful beauty despite being in her 50s. Her departure leaves a big void for the audience, colleagues and relatives.

On August 11, Meritorious Artist Ngoc Trinh also congratulated her students at the graduation ceremony.

The family quietly held a funeral service for her at her home at 7 p.m. on September 1, then announced it to the public.

At the age of 52, Meritorious Artist Ngoc Trinh is still full of energy, both teaching and performing, and studying for a master's degree in theater in Hanoi to complete her master's thesis. However, a serious illness suddenly ended her artistic journey.

The passing of Meritorious Artist Ngoc Trinh is not only a loss for her family, friends, colleagues and many students, but also leaves a big void in the hearts of the audience.

She passed away with many plans and aspirations yet to be realized. Above all, the roles of Vy, Xang, Be Ba… and the lesson plans on the podium will forever be the spiritual legacy, the mark of a talented artist with an unfortunate fate but full of love for her profession.

"I am saddened and heartbroken. Ngoc Trinh accompanied me in many art programs. She still lives in the hearts of the public who love her talent" - Master-artist of the zither Vu Kim Yen said.
