Meeting to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the 489th Special Forces Battalion in Da Nang

DNO - On the morning of November 9, the 489th Da Nang Special Forces Battalion held a meeting to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its founding (November 1965 - November 2025). Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Tran Anh Tuan attended and presented flowers of congratulations.

Reading the commemorative speech at the ceremony, Head of the Battalion Liaison Committee Duong Minh Chi said that the 489th Special Forces Battalion was born in the context of the Southern army and people having defeated the "Special War" strategy of the US - puppet army. The US had switched to the "Local War" strategy by directly sending US expeditionary troops to the Southern battlefield to rescue the Saigon puppet army.

On November 5, 1965, in response to combat mission requirements, the Military Region 5 Command decided to allow Da Nang city to establish the 489th Special Forces Battalion.

During the 10 years of fighting the Americans, from the establishment of Company 1 to the establishment of Battalion 489, the unit fought 309 large and small battles, eliminated 7,844 enemies from combat, destroyed many enemy war vehicles, such as 291 airplanes, 528 military vehicles, 31 artillery pieces of various types...

With that achievement, the 489th Da Nang Special Forces Battalion was awarded many noble titles by the State, such as Heroic Unit of the People's Armed Forces; 9 Military Exploit Medals, 41 War Exploit Medals, 5 Emulation Flags at Military Region level or higher, and 22 times recognized as a Heroic Unit in Destroying the US.

The battalion has 13 comrades awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces.

Speaking at the meeting, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Tran Anh Tuan congratulated the achievements of the 489th Special Forces Battalion during the resistance war.

At the same time, he said that when returning to normal life, promoting the qualities of "Uncle Ho's soldiers", the veterans of the battalion always uphold the spirit of dedication, actively participate in local work activities, and are trusted and highly appreciated by the local Party Committee, government and people.

That exemplary behavior has encouraged and motivated generations of officers and soldiers of the Battalion to continue promoting good qualities and traditions in the new period, contributing to propagating and educating the fighting and sacrificial traditions of previous generations for the cause of national liberation.

During the meeting, the city leaders respectfully listened to the opinions of the battalion veterans, especially in Party building, government building, socio-economic development, and the obligations and rights of veterans association members...

The Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee hopes that veterans will live happily and healthily, and continue to encourage and educate their descendants and local residents to comply with the Party's guidelines and policies and the State's laws.
