Garbage classification - starting from students' awareness

Collect and sort trash, exchange points for gifts.

At Son Tra High School, the garbage classification model has been implemented for many years, but only really spread strongly when students responded as a natural habit.

On the school yard, colorful trash bins are scientifically arranged, each color corresponding to a different type of trash: organic, recyclable, and remaining trash.

Not only "throwing in the right place", students are also instructed on how to identify and process trash before throwing it away, in order to reduce the amount of mixed trash, and at the same time create a useful recycling source for fundraising activities.

“We do not see garbage classification as a task, but as a way to live more responsibly towards the environment,” said Duong Ngoc Thien Phuc, a student in class 11/1.

Phuc is a core member of the “School Green Team”, a group of self-managed students responsible for propaganda, reminders and organizing regular inspections of garbage classification in each class.

Thanks to those small but persistent actions, each day the school becomes greener and cleaner, and more importantly, environmental awareness has truly "sprouted" in each student.

The success of the waste sorting model at Son Tra High School is closely linked to the leading role of the School Youth Union. From the propaganda and guidance stages to maintaining long-term activities, the Youth Union members are always the center connecting the school, teachers and students.

Mr. Le The Toan, Secretary of the School Youth Union, shared: “Garbage classification is not just about keeping the school clean. We consider it an awareness education activity, helping students understand that every small action contributes to changing the living environment. When students find joy in doing so, the movement will sustain itself without the need for slogans.”

According to Mr. Toan, in addition to the trash sorting system, the School Youth Union also cooperates with the Parents' Association to implement the "Green Love" program, collecting recycled trash to raise funds to support students in difficult circumstances.

“The students see that even things that seem to be discarded can still help their friends. That is the most meaningful way of education,” said Mr. Toan.

The trash classification system helps recycle trash easily, contributing to environmental protection.

Behind those numbers and green models is the passion of Mr. Bui Minh Quang, Principal of Son Tra High School. He always worries about how to make the movement not just a slogan but become a way of life.
“The most important thing is to maintain the habit. We do not pursue achievements but aim to form a culture of waste classification, meaning that students do it voluntarily, because they believe it is the right thing to do,” Mr. Quang shared.

From the 2023-2024 school year, the school has integrated environmental protection and waste classification into classroom activities and career guidance activities. Every month, the School Youth Union organizes a "Green Classroom" vote, a form of competition that also encourages students' self-management.

Spread the love...

Not only Son Tra, many other educational institutions in Da Nang city are also actively implementing the model of waste classification at source. In particular, Thanh Khe High School is a unit with a flexible approach, connecting with students through many creative forms of communication.

Ms. Huynh Bao Tram, Secretary of the Youth Union of Thanh Khe High School, shared:
“We regularly organize extracurricular activities, or sort and collect trash to exchange for gifts. Students are encouraged and educated through activities organized by the school union, thereby educating students to turn awareness into action.”

Ms. Tram added, “When children speak the language of youth, the green message will spread faster.”

Currently, at Thanh Khe High School, recyclable waste is sorted daily and converted into “green points” as a criterion for evaluating the competition of classes. This activity not only contributes to preserving the school environment but also forms green living skills, thrift and responsibility for students.

Sorting waste at source in schools is not just a technical matter, but a journey to educate the young generation about green citizenship. When students understand and voluntarily do it, that is a true success.
