Hundreds of households suffered damage to their homes, and a series of offices and schools were left cracked and dilapidated, forcing them to evacuate urgently. The reconstruction is expected to be arduous without a sustainable solution.
Do not hesitate with landslides
Under the pouring rain, leaders of Tay Giang commune hurriedly approached the hill behind the residential area of Tay Giang ancient village (in Agrong hamlet) when people informed them that there was a crack stretching over 300m at noon on October 30.
Mr. Arat Blui, Chairman of Tay Giang Commune People's Committee, shared that with the volume of earth and rock of more than 5,000m³, if the hill collapsed, about 60 households would be affected. The locality was forced to immediately evacuate 40 households in the high-risk area and mobilize the remaining 20 households to be ready to leave when there was heavy rain.
Police, militia and youth volunteers immediately showed up that night to help move people’s belongings to safe evacuation sites. As it was still raining, any delay could have had dire consequences.
Ms. Briu Thi Coon, a resident of Tay Giang ancient village, said that the hill collapsed during the night. The decisiveness of the commune leaders helped 40 households escape.
“The whole commune recorded more than 105 landslides. According to statistics, 10 houses were completely destroyed and many houses were partially destroyed or flooded by rocks and soil. We have evacuated 165 households with more than 1,100 people to safety. We are still closely monitoring the developments of storms and landslides and continue to promote the '4 on-site' motto, with the goal of ensuring the safety of people's lives,” Mr. Blúi shared.
In the highlands, the bright spot in the recent flood season was that the experience in responding to heavy rain and landslides was brought to the highest level by local officials. It is worth mentioning that the communes were severely isolated and communication was constantly interrupted, but the local forces assigned to stick to the residential areas proactively surveyed the landslide situation and urgently evacuated hundreds of households in areas at risk of landslides to safety. Thanks to that, human losses were limited to the lowest level.
Mr. Vo Nhu Son Tra, Vice Chairman of Nam Tra My Commune People's Committee, said that the landslide situation on the slope behind the residential area and a series of headquarters in the commune's administrative center such as the Party Committee, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, the Commune Police headquarters, the Nam Tra My High School dormitory... is becoming complicated. The locality has prepared a plan to urgently evacuate this area, especially when the storm situation in the coming time is still complicated, the risk of landslides can occur at any time.
Huge damage figure
The highlands of Da Nang city have been a "hot spot" for landslides for many years. Many structures are facing the risk of being unsafe when the "water-filled" mountains are still waiting to collapse. It is worth noting that most of the damaged structures were invested in not long ago, playing an important role in promoting the development of the mountainous areas.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ky, Vice Chairman of Hung Son Commune People's Committee, informed that landslides are affecting 3 schools, 10 residential areas and is isolating more than 15 villages in the commune. DT606 route - the only traffic route connecting Tay Giang commune center to Hung Son commune center - has 40 landslides and broken roads, making it impossible to travel. Dozens of landslides have also appeared on university and inter-village routes, the extent of damage has not been determined yet.
In particular, the landslide caused serious damage to the commune People's Committee headquarters, with cracked walls and a skewed structure that could collapse if heavy rain continues. The locality has requested the City People's Committee to promptly consider declaring an emergency situation due to natural disasters in Hung Son commune.
Mr. Le Trung Thuc, Chairman of Tra Tap Commune People's Committee, said that according to the latest statistics, landslides have affected 79 households, 4 schools, Tra Cang Health Station, Commune Military Command, Commune Public Administration Service Center and many embankments, suspension bridges, domestic water, irrigation works... Regarding transportation alone, the total damage to the university and inter-village roads in the whole commune is more than 77,350m. The total estimated damage in the commune during the recent flood is up to nearly 52 billion VND.
According to records in localities, immediately after the flood, recovery work was deployed synchronously, from supplying and storing food; opening the first step of traffic connecting to residential areas; checking cracks and landslides to continue implementing evacuation solutions... Work became more urgent than ever when the weather forecast was still complicated, and storm No. 13 threatened.
According to statistics from the City Civil Defense Command, the flood from October 25 to 31 alone caused more than 837 billion VND in damage to the entire area. Of this, the damage to transportation, mainly the main routes to the highlands, totaled more than 156 billion VND.
Towards a sustainable solution, Chairman of the City People's Committee Pham Duc An assigned the Department of Agriculture and Environment to urgently survey, assess the current situation, research and develop a long-term and sustainable disaster adaptation project, focusing on key projects such as: relocating and arranging residents in mountainous areas with high risk of landslides.
At the same time, the Department of Construction was assigned to review and propose funding needs for upgrading and solidifying highland roads and national highways to ensure traffic safety during the rainy and stormy season. This is the basis for the City People's Committee to request the Central Government to allocate funding to support implementation in the period 2026-2030.
