Many sections of National Highway 61, from Ben Nhut to Rach Tia Bridge, are full of potholes, posing potential traffic safety risks.
The "painful" road
Every time she passes the road from Ben Nhut to Rach Tia bridge, Ms. Nguyen Thi Be Ba, a resident of Go Quao commune, has to hold the steering wheel tightly because the road surface is full of potholes, many sections are deeply sunken, and water pools form. “I take my child to school but I am afraid of falling. On sunny days, the dust flies everywhere, and on rainy days, the car can easily fall into potholes,” Ms. Be Ba said.
Not only Ms. Ba, but also people living along the road also suffer the same fate. Trucks, buses, and motorbikes traveling on this road have to endure the road surface full of potholes; just a little carelessness can cause a fall. Mr. Nguyen Van Hung (56 years old), residing in Dinh Hoa commune, said: "Every time I go to the market, it takes a long time because I have to stop at many places to let others go. Vehicles can easily fall into deep holes, which is very dangerous."

National Highway 61, Ben Nhut - Rach Tia Bridge section (Go Quao), is seriously degraded.
The 10km stretch of road was put into operation in 2016, initially paved with asphalt, but after just a few years it began to peel off. Due to the increased traffic volume, the road surface quickly deteriorated. Recently, many locations have sagged and the asphalt has protruded, making traffic a nightmare for local residents and long-distance drivers.
Road upgrade by 2026
According to the People's Committee of An Giang province, the National Highway 61 section from km67+150 to km77+250 passing through Go Quao - Vinh Thuan area belongs to the Ho Chi Minh road project, invested and built according to the level III standards of the delta, completed in 2016. After nearly 10 years of operation, the road surface has seriously degraded. For many years, due to the lack of funds for periodic repairs, units have only been able to patch up local areas, not enough to completely fix the damage.

Construction units are scraping off the old asphalt layer on National Highway 61 from Ben Nhut to Rach Tia Bridge (Go Quao District), preparing for road surface repair and upgrading.
Faced with that situation, the People's Committee of An Giang province has proposed the Ministry of Construction and the Vietnam Road Administration to allow a comprehensive repair of the route. On October 8, 2025, the Ministry of Construction issued a document approving the investment preparation policy for the project "Repairing the roadbed, road surface, drainage system and completing the traffic safety system of km67+174 - km77+250, National Highway 61 (section coinciding with Ho Chi Minh Road), An Giang province" in the 2026 repair plan, with road economic career capital.

Construction unit repairs and fixes potholes on National Highway 61, Ben Nhut - Rach Tia Bridge section (Go Quao).
Currently, the Vietnam Road Administration is implementing repairs and improvements to ensure traffic from now until the end of the year to serve the travel needs of the people. At the same time, the unit is preparing to invest in upgrading and renovating this route to ensure traffic. When the road is repaired, people will no longer be afraid every time they travel. This is not only the expectation of the people, but also an urgent requirement to ensure traffic safety and regional economic development.
