In 2025, there will be 8 candidates for the title of professor approved by the Physics Professorship Council, of which Professor Tran Thi Thanh Van is the only female candidate. She is one of the few women recognized as meeting the standards of professor this year.
Professor Tran Thi Thanh Van was born in 1980, her hometown is Binh Dinh province (old). She is currently the Head of the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology, University of Science, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City.
Ms. Tran Thi Thanh Van graduated with a degree in Physics, majoring in Applied Physics from the University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City in 2002; then graduated with a Master's degree in Physics, majoring in Optical Physics from the same university in 2006.

In 2011, she was awarded a PhD in Optics - Laser, Physics - Chemistry, Atmosphere; majoring in Optics - Laser, Physics - Chemistry, Atmosphere at the University of Science and Technology Lille 1, France.
Professor Tran Thi Thanh Van began her academic career as a teaching assistant at the Faculty of Physics, University of Science, Ho Chi Minh City from 2002 to 2005.
From 2011 to 2016, Ms. Van worked at the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology of the university as a lecturer. From 2017 to 2018, she held the position of Deputy Head of the Faculty, then was appointed as Head of the Faculty from 2018 to present. She is also the Head of the Department of Magnetic and Biomedical Materials from 2022 to June 2025.
In 2018, Ms. Tran Thi Thanh Van was recognized as an associate professor of Physics. In 2025, her application was approved by the State Council of Professors, becoming the youngest female professor of the year.
In addition to her professional activities, Professor Tran Thi Thanh Van also holds a number of positions such as Chairman of the Science and Training Council of the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology; member of the Science and Training Council of the University of Natural Sciences, Ho Chi Minh City National University; member of the Interdisciplinary Council of Materials Science and Technology, Ho Chi Minh City National University; Chairman/member of the Acceptance Council of school-level and Ho Chi Minh City National University-level topics, etc.
Professor Tran Thi Thanh Van's three research directions are: Rare earth-doped luminescent materials, applications in optoelectronics and anti-counterfeiting security; Biomedical materials, applications in dentistry, drug delivery and antibacterial/antibacterial; Functional nanomaterials, applications in photocatalysis, Raman sensors, optical sensors and energy fields.
To date, Professor Tran Thi Thanh Van has published 81 scientific articles, of which 45 were published in prestigious international journals. Since being promoted to Associate Professor, she has been the main author of 13 international articles, including 9 in Q1 journals and 4 in Q2 journals.
During her career, Professor Tran Thi Thanh Van successfully guided a PhD student to defend his thesis, and participated in guiding many students to win scientific research awards. At the same time, she presided over 6 research projects from grassroots to ministerial level and participated in 7 other projects, all of which were accepted with satisfactory results.
Ms. Van published 2 books, both of which are published by reputable publishers. They are the monograph Functional Nanomaterials - Volume 1 Photonics - Photocatalysis (Ho Chi Minh City National University Publishing House) in 2017 and the monograph Rare Earth Doped Luminescent Materials (Ho Chi Minh City National University Publishing House) in 2024.
Not stopping there, Professor Tran Thi Thanh Van presided over the project to open a full-time university training program in Materials Technology, which was reviewed and put into use by Ho Chi Minh City National University, starting enrollment in 2020.
Ms. Van also participates in reviewing articles in prestigious international journals such as: Journal of Alloys and Compounds, Optical Materials, Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, Journal of Luminescence. She is currently a guest editor for a special issue of the journal Ceramics International published by Elsevier (Q1, IF: 5.2).
Thanks to her efforts and contributions, Professor Tran Thi Thanh Van has been awarded many titles such as Outstanding Young Teacher, Emulation Fighter; and received Certificates of Merit from the Ministry of Education and Training , the Party Committee of the University of Natural Sciences and the National University of Ho Chi Minh City.
