Nguyen Thi Thanh Truc, a dedicated teacher at the Khanh Hoa Center for Rehabilitation andEducation for Disabled Children, has devoted 10 years to working with disadvantaged children.
With her love for the profession, patience and perseverance, she not only helps children overcome difficulties but also builds a foundation for them.
Nguyen Thi Thanh Truc, a teacher at the Practical Teaching Room of the Khanh Hoa Center for Rehabilitation and Education for Children with Disabilities, has just completed 10 years of working with children with intellectual disabilities. With her love and passion for the profession, Ms. Truc has constantly strived to help many children with disabilities access education and develop themselves. She shared that, although a decade has passed, the memories of the first days she took her first steps to the center are still intact in her mind. Those were the clear laughter mixed with the sound of loud screams and wordless gestures from the hearing-impaired children. Faced with a special and challenging environment, Ms. Truc could not help but feel bewildered and worried.
Teacher Nguyen Thi Thanh Truc has devoted 10 years to teaching children with intellectual disabilities at Khanh Hoa Rehabilitation Center, giving them the opportunity to become independent and integrate into society.
Feelings of joy, sadness, happiness and helplessness have been intertwined throughout her career. Looking back at each generation of students, she cannot forget her first students, especially H., a boy with Treacher Collins syndrome, with a different face and weak body. Despite having to undergo many surgeries, H. has always shown himself to be a good and determined child, eager to learn. It was H. who helped Ms. Truc have more faith in the arduous but meaningful journey she is on. "Compared to many lives, I am still very lucky," Ms. Truc confided.
Being a teacher for children with intellectual disabilities is not simply about imparting knowledge. It is a journey of patience and requires infinite perseverance. Children “have difficulty remembering and forgetting”, so a small lesson can take several hours or even months to learn. Sometimes, unusual behaviors such as aggression or self-harm from students make Ms. Truc feel helpless, but with the support of colleagues and the motivation of love, she still maintains faith in the path she is on. She confided that accompanying those children helped her realize the value of patience and perseverance. “Help children so that children can help themselves” is the guiding principle that she always keeps in mind, aspiring to support students with intellectual disabilities to gradually become independent and have a meaningful life.
For Ms. Truc, each student's maturity and independence is a great happiness.
Ms. Truc talked about the difficulties that the center is facing, such as lack of facilities, narrow playgrounds and lack of safety for children. She always wishes for a spacious, fully equipped learning environment, where children can freely play and develop life skills. To become useful people to society, her students need a suitable space, not only to study but also to integrate, practice skills and approach a normal life like everyone else.
Over the years, despite limited conditions, some of Ms. Truc's students have made remarkable progress and found jobs after graduation, such as working as waiters, parking attendants, or small traders. For Ms. Truc, each student's maturity and independence is a great happiness, the result of the tireless efforts that she and her colleagues have put in. Seeing her students grow up day by day, seeing them gradually accepted by society and living independently is an indescribable joy for her. "This special education journey is sometimes bumpy, but I believe that with the support of social organizations and the perseverance of teachers, we will achieve certain successes," Ms. Truc affirmed.
Like many teachers in the special education profession, Ms. Truc does not consider herself a big person. "I am just one of the small drops of water in the vast ocean of our country's education," she shared. However, she believes that if millions of drops of water come together, they will create powerful waves, spreading love to less fortunate lives. Teachers in this field have been dedicating themselves to keeping the fire burning for their profession, with the hope that students with disabilities can integrate and live fully in the community.

During her 10 years in the classroom, Ms. Truc has constantly researched and innovated appropriate educational methods for children with intellectual disabilities. Although her work has not brought her glory or fame, with all her love and passion, she has always persevered in her profession, a profession that she considers a non-stop dedication. On this journey, Ms. Truc is not alone, because beside her there are many other teachers, who are silently working day and night, devoted to the moons that are not yet full. Like a light that never goes out, they silently light the way to help children with disabilities integrate into society more fully and positively.
Ms. Truc is a typical image of dedication and compassion, the pride of the special education sector in Vietnam. Teachers like her are not only those who teach letters, but also those who give wings to dreams, sow hope and faith in life for the less fortunate. On that challenging journey, she has devoted all her love and determination to bring her students a better life.
