According to Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Bich Dao (Doctor at Hanoi Medical University Hospital), when kissing, bacteria, viruses and fungi can be transmitted from the mouth and saliva of one person to another, causing diseases related to the ear, nose and throat (ENT).
When kissing, pathogens such as fungi, viruses, and bacteria are easily transmitted through saliva.

Some diseases that can be transmitted through kissing include: bacterial and viral pharyngitis; bacterial and viral rhinitis and sinusitis; bacterial otitis media transmitted from the mouth; infectious mononucleosis (Mononucleosis - "kissing disease"); oral herpes virus infection (cold sores); oral candidiasis causing thrush, fungal pharyngitis.
In addition, gonococcal pharyngitis can also be transmitted through deep kissing, if one of the two people is infected with gonorrhea bacteria.
According to data from some dermatology clinics, the rate of pharyngeal infection in heterosexual gonorrhea patients is about 3 - 7% in men; 10 - 20% in women and 10 - 25% in homosexual men.
Up to 90% of cases are asymptomatic. The disease manifests as pharyngitis, acute tonsillitis, sometimes with fever and swollen lymph nodes in the neck.
To reduce the risk of transmitting or contracting an illness through kissing, Dr. Dao shares: Avoid kissing when you or the other person is sick. Avoid kissing anyone on the lips if you or they have cold sores, warts, or sores around the lips or in the mouth. Maintain good oral hygiene. Cough and sneeze into a tissue if you have a cold.
