"Creepy" indifference
Watching the clip of a female student being beaten by a group of friends until 3 ribs were broken, psychologist Hong Huong (permanent resident at the Resident Library of the Vietnam Association for the Protection of Children's Rights) could not help but be shocked.
“I feel so heartbroken,” the expert sighed.

According to experts, the incident in which a female student was beaten by a friend and had her ribs broken in Ho Chi Minh City is a serious psychological shock that can leave lasting mental trauma if not supported promptly.
“In the short term, the victim will certainly fall into a state of psychological crisis, confusion, fear, and even loss of faith in the learning environment and surrounding relationships. In the long term, those mental wounds can haunt the victim for life,” Ms. Huong said.
Not only concerned about the violent behavior, Ms. Huong said that what is more alarming is the widespread apathy among the group of students involved.
“In the clip, viewers can see many other students witnessing the incident but standing there indifferently watching, filming , and laughing. That reflects the decline in morality and emotions among a segment of today’s youth, when they no longer know how to feel compassion, and do not know how to put themselves in the pain of others,” she emphasized.
According to experts, the root of the problem lies in family education , accounting for 80% of the cause. Family is the first place to form personality. Children learn how to behave from their parents.
If parents are hot-tempered, lack emotional control or are lax in management, children are likely to develop negative reactions. At the age of 12-15, children develop strongly emotionally, are vulnerable, and impulsive. If not oriented towards emotional intelligence (EQ), small conflicts can also explode into violence.
To solve the problem at its root, Ms. Huong suggested that both parents and students need to be educated in parallel. Parents must be guided on how to talk to and listen to their children and control their own emotions.
Schools can coordinate with women's associations and psychologists to organize communication sessions and training on parenting skills. Children need to be taught to love themselves and respect others, and adults must be role models in behavior.
In addition, bullied children often do not dare to share their experiences for fear of being discriminated against. When there is no one to listen and no emotional support, they easily fall into a serious crisis. Ms. Huong also suggested that institutions should be tightened to prevent school violence and psychological counseling systems should be strengthened for children.
“Children will always be children. They act on their emotions, while their reason is only fully developed at the age of 24-25. Therefore, the responsibility lies with adults. We must work together to create a safe mental environment, where parents, schools and society work together, so that heartbreaking incidents like this do not happen again,” said the psychologist.
Consider the legal and social aspects
Experts say that perhaps the current living environment is too “acidic”, making people irritable and easily agitated. Children lack a truly peaceful living environment.
“We need to look back at the general environment, from adults to children, almost everyone is caught up in a cycle of constant stress and pressure. When parents are stressed, their children also absorb that energy. It's like a chain effect.
Humans, after all, cannot live in isolation. Like ants, we have a natural need to connect, to share, to be loved. When those needs are not met, people easily become lonely and vulnerable, and children are the first to be affected,” Ms. Huong said.
Lawyer Nguyen Minh Dung ( Can Tho City Bar Association) said that the incident in which a group of students beat a friend to the point of breaking three ribs is an act that shows signs of harming the health of others, a serious form of school violence. Legally, depending on the injury rate and the age of the perpetrator, the incident can be considered in many ways.
First of all, according to Decree 80/2017/ND-CP, school violence includes any act of beating, causing physical or mental harm to students in educational institutions or independent classes. The school is responsible for disciplinary action and reporting to the authorities as prescribed. However, if the victim suffers serious injuries, such as broken ribs, internal handling is not enough.
Thus, in this case, in addition to disciplinary action in the school, the police need to be involved to assess the injuries, clarify the motive, the extent of the damage and the age of the children involved. Depending on the assessment results, the authorities will determine whether there is enough basis for criminal proceedings.
“At any level, this is a warning bell about life skills education, age-based psychological control, and the management responsibilities of schools and parents in preventing school violence,” he said.
