Female student in crisis because personal photos suddenly posted on porn website

(Dan Tri) - A 19-year-old female student surnamed Liang in China is in crisis after a photo she took of herself crying was stolen and used illegally on many pornographic websites.

Liang is a freshman at a university in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China. Two years ago, while reading a novel, she felt so moved that she burst into tears and took a photo of the moment and posted it on social media.

However, the photo has since been illegally used by many pornographic websites. Liang said she only discovered this when her friends informed her. Recently, she also discovered that her photo was being used repeatedly to advertise a number of "sensitive" products posted on social media.

She filed complaints on several platforms, but only a few of the complained parties removed their posts for violating community standards. Many others continued to openly use her image for advertising. Feeling helpless after a period of severe psychological crisis, Liang reported the incident to the police for support.

“I don’t understand why such an ordinary photo was used to advertise sensitive products. Although most people around me sympathized with me about this incident, I also heard some people gossiping behind my back. There were even strangers who recognized me as the person whose photo was used to advertise sensitive products,” Liang shared.

Liang said she felt helpless not knowing how to request the removal of her image that had been used without permission.

“I have a clean and healthy lifestyle. In the illegally used photo, I was not wearing revealing clothes or making any provocative gestures. I don’t understand what I did wrong to get into this trouble,” Liang confided.

Liang also called on social media platforms to improve their reporting systems, as she said it is currently difficult for victims to take effective action to protect their rights on social media.

“When I discovered that my photos were stolen and used without permission, I sent many complaints with full supporting documents, but most of the complaints on social media platforms had no results,” Liang added.

Lawyer Chen Pingfan, from Furong Law Office in Hunan Province, told Chinese media that Liang's case shows the helplessness of victims in the digital age, when their personal image and honor are violated, but the victims cannot find a way to completely and thoroughly handle the problem.

Parents need to teach their children how to use social networks wisely and soberly.

In today's digital age, parents need to accompany and guide their children to use social networks safely. Social networks bring many benefits, but also have many potential risks that children need to be warned about. Children do not always make the right choices when sharing content online, which can lead to many consequences.

Keeping yourself safe online is a skill parents need to teach their children (Illustration: iStock).

First of all, parents need to acknowledge the benefits of social networks, such as helping children have more ways to connect with friends and relatives, interact with more diverse groups of friends. Children can also find useful information about extracurricular activities, develop creativity through sharing ideas, and connect with people with similar interests.

Communication with teachers and classmates is also quicker and easier. Children can search for useful scientific information, update current news from official sources...

However, parents also need to help children understand the negative aspects that need to be aware of when using social networks. For example, children can be bullied online, have their privacy and safety violated, have their personal image negatively affected in an unwanted way, and have their mental health negatively affected by problems arising on social networks...

Research also shows that excessive use of social media can cause mental health problems such as depression and anxiety disorders.

In addition, when online, children may inadvertently be exposed to content that is not appropriate for their age. They may spend too much time on social networks, affecting their academic performance, quality of life, and real-life relationships.

So what should parents do? First, parents need to pay attention to their children's online activities, but avoid monitoring them too closely, causing them to feel "suffocated". Show respect for their children's privacy, but parents also need to explain to their children that parents need to care, to ensure their safety.

Parents should guide children on basic principles when using social networks, such as always interacting in a respectful and polite manner; thinking carefully before posting content on social networks, applying the principle of asking yourself: What will my family, teachers, and friends think if I post this content?

Parents also need to help children use account privacy settings and account security skills, and tell children not to share passwords, even with close friends. In addition, parents need to tell children not to make friends with strangers, the principle is clear: no connection, no friend.

Finally, parents need to set rules for social media use with their children in the family. For example, no phone use during meals, no phone use one hour before bedtime...

Every child uses social media differently, depending on their maturity level, personality, and mental state. Parents should adjust flexibly to suit each child. It is important to understand how your child uses social media. Finally, parents should not forget: Parents' online behavior and social media use will set an example for their children to follow.
