At the age of 17, thanks to the guidance of her two half-brothers - members of the Indochinese Communist Party, Mrs. Van began to participate in revolutionary activities.

In August 1945, she took on the role of Viet Minh cadre in Xuan Truong district, actively mobilizing people to participate in the general uprising in Xuan Truong and Giao Thuy districts. She joined the Indochinese Communist Party on June 30, 1946.
During the fierce war years, Ms. Dinh Thi Van built an elite intelligence network that brought many unimaginable achievements to our army, such as meticulously investigating the defense system of the Saigon army in the South of the 17th parallel during the period 1959-1960.
Some of the outstanding achievements that intelligence officer Dinh Thi Van and her network accomplished include: providing timely information about the US preparing to send troops to South Vietnam after the failure of the special war strategy; knowing in advance the plan for the Junction City operation, helping our army proactively respond and defeat the enemy's plot. In addition, she also had the merit of guiding many generations of intelligence officers and supporting the Vietnamese air force.
There is a story of Mrs. Dinh Thi Van that makes many people admire the resilience of Vietnamese women, which is finding a new wife for her husband so that she can continue her revolutionary activities.
In October 1954, she received secret orders to continue her activities in the South. To protect herself and to comply with the mission, she pretended to be a migrant trader who had come to the South to make a living, calling on some trusted people, people with positions in the French government or army, to support her and provide her with information.
To support her plan, her superiors decided to announce: "Dinh Thi Van betrayed the Party, abandoned her duty and fled to the South. Sentenced to death in absentia." This announcement spread quickly, shocking her friends, colleagues, relatives and people in her hometown.
In this way, Mrs. Dinh Thi Van continued her mission in the South, while sacrificing her personal happiness and finding a woman to replace her as her wife, avoiding suspicious eyes and ensuring the safety of her own mission. This also helped avoid gossip and suspicion that her husband was a cheating husband.
Not only was she excellent in intelligence activities, she also played an important role in training and educating the next generation of intelligence officers. She was the one who mentored many intelligence officers, helping them gain more skills and courage to fight in enemy territory. At the same time, she also effectively supported the Vietnamese air force in gathering information and coordinating operations.
Thanks to her resounding achievements, Ms. Dinh Thi Van was awarded many titles by the Vietnamese State: Title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces, 2 Second-class Independence Medals, First-class Resistance Medal, First-class Feat of Arms Medal, Victory Flag Medal...
In 1995, she passed away in Hanoi at the age of 79. To recognize the legendary female spy's contributions, a street in Ha Long ward, Nam Dinh city and another street in Thanh Khe district, Da Nang city were named after her.
