Teachers in the flooded areas of Quang Binh and Quang Tri these days are like 'janitors' when they go to school with protective clothing and cleaning tools. They have to quickly clean up the classrooms and welcome students back to school even though everything is still a mess at home...
Over 125 schools submerged in "water"
Floods have caused severe damage to Quang Binh province, especially Le Thuy and Quang Ninh districts. The whole province has over 125 schools submerged in "water". Among them, some schools are flooded over 2 meters deep.
In the dark, when the water just rose, teachers had to go to school to check the situation.
Despite proactive response measures, equipment, books, and learning tools at many schools are still damaged due to the heavy impact of flood waters in recent days.
Currently, the flood water level in Le Thuy District, Quang Ninh has receded but at a slow pace. However, many schools are still covered by flood water.
Teachers check files, study materials, papers..., afraid of getting wet. Only after checking carefully can teachers feel at ease.
According to information from the Department of Education and Training of Le Thuy District (Quang Binh), only 6/81 schools in this locality have started teaching and learning activities, the rest have not been able to let students return to school because they are still flooded.
Mr. Nguyen Van Vung, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Le Thuy District, said that in order to bring students back to school soon, educational institutions in the area all follow the common motto "wherever the water recedes, we move there".

Put aside housework to go to school to fight the flood
At An Thuy Kindergarten, the flood receded slowly, leaving behind devastation from the schoolyard to the classrooms. The walls that were vividly decorated by the teachers are now covered in mud. During the days of flood, teachers at An Thuy Kindergarten took turns coming to work, proactively cleaning up when the water receded to reduce the work after the flood. Having to "row a boat" to get to school, Ms. Bui Thi Dung, Vice Principal of the school, shared: "The teachers' houses in the school were all flooded, we are also "victims" of natural disasters, but everyone put aside their housework to go to school to work on the flood. We just hope the flood recedes quickly so that the children can soon return to a normal learning environment."
Teachers clean up school together after flood
In Quang Ninh District (Quang Binh), many schools suffered severe consequences due to floods. According to statistics from the Department of Education and Training, as of today (October 31), only 7 schools have resumed teaching and learning activities, the remaining 40 schools still have students off.
Despite facing many problems, teachers in flooded areas are still happy and do their jobs well to keep their schools clean and beautiful to welcome students back to school.
At Vo Ninh Primary School (Quang Ninh District), the amount of mud in the school grounds is quite thick. This is one of the schools deeply submerged in this flood. 17 classrooms with many student desks and chairs were submerged in flood water. Understanding the hardship of teachers, dozens of officers and soldiers of Quang Binh Provincial Police and Quang Ninh District Police went to the schools to help teachers clean up after the flood.

Without support, we don't know when we will finish cleaning.
During 2 days (October 30 and 31), hundreds of Quang Tri Provincial Police officers, after the water receded, were present in Vinh Lam and Vinh Son communes (Vinh Linh district) to support people and teachers in cleaning up mud after the flood, allowing students to return to school soon.
Phuc Lam school, part of Vinh Long Kindergarten, has been deeply flooded for many days, causing mud to flow into the school yard and classrooms.
At Phuc Lam school (Vinh Long Kindergarten, Vinh Linh District) since yesterday afternoon (October 30), dozens of teachers have been present at the school, taking advantage of the time when the water level has lowered and is gradually receding to push mud out of the classrooms, soon returning a clean environment for students to return to school.
"During the recent flood, Phuc Lam school was deeply flooded, mud and soil flooded into classrooms. The school mobilized 20 staff and teachers to clean up so that students could return to school soon," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Van, Principal of Vinh Long Kindergarten.
Vinh Long Kindergarten is home to 230 students. During the recent flood, the school suffered damage to facilities such as televisions, refrigerators, computers, filing cabinets, etc. In the immediate future, the school will prioritize cleaning and sanitation, then consider options to repair the damaged facilities.
Without the armed forces and support from union members, who knows how much harder it would be for teachers?
In Vinh Son commune, as soon as the water receded at 3 kindergartens, the commune police force came to support teachers in clearing mud, cleaning classrooms, schoolyards and the route to school.
Yesterday afternoon (October 30), hundreds of Quang Tri Provincial Police officers also brought supplies and equipment to Vinh Lam Commune, a locality where 450 households were deeply submerged in floodwaters. Here, the officers, together with local residents, teachers, etc., joined hands to overcome the damage caused by the floods.
