Some information about the 2025 International Biology Olympiad
The 36th International Biology Olympiad was held in the Republic of the Philippines, from July 19 to 27, 2025, with the participation of 81 delegations from 81 countries and territories , including 3 observer delegations , and 298 contestants .
The IBO 2025 exam consists of two official exam days:
One day of theory test with 2 tests, each test lasts 180 minutes.
One day of practical exam in 4 exam rooms, each room 90 minutes.
In fact, due to the time required to prepare specimens and equipment, the candidates participated in the practical exam continuously for 12 hours , from 12:30 on July 22 to 0:30 on July 23.
The theoretical exam consists of 85 questions , focusing on current and global topics such as: Environmental pollution and ecosystem restoration; Green growth and carbon neutrality; Responding to climate change; Community disease prevention; Diagnosis and treatment of diseases according to the principles of precision medicine.
The practical exam covers four specialized areas, requiring interdisciplinary knowledge and advanced laboratory skills:
Biomedical : Interpretation of electrocardiograms, blood and urine biochemistry tests, X-ray analysis, antibiotic selection for common diseases.
Molecular and cell biology : Gene and protein analysis; molecular activity measurement to identify and predict evolution of parasitic pathogens.
Ecology and systematics : Anatomical and taxonomic skills for identification, monitoring and development of sustainable aquaculture.
Microbiology : Classification and analysis of the growth of bacteria and fungi that cause food poisoning in humans.
The International Biology Olympiad is considered the leading comprehensive international competition in natural sciences at high school level, requiring candidates to not only master biological knowledge but also apply integrated thinking in the fields of Mathematics - Physics - Chemistry - Environment, and at the same time master laboratory skills ranging from the molecular, organismal to the ecosystem and biosphere levels.
The excellent results of the Vietnamese team this year once again affirm the international integration capacity of Vietnamese students, as well as their maturity in approaching modern scientific education trends in the world.
