Mr. Johnson said he and President Biden met for more than 15 minutes before the meeting. “It was a productive meeting,” Mr. Johnson told reporters at the Capitol. “I enjoyed my meeting with the president.”

Mr Johnson insisted that the US Congress “will not abandon” Ukraine. However, he said that Republicans in the US House of Representatives will first introduce a separate bill to provide $14.5 billion in aid to Israel, as they need more information about the government’s aid strategy for Ukraine.
“We must stand with our vital ally in the Middle East and that is Israel,” Mr Johnson said in a speech.
Mr. Biden met with Mr. Johnson and Mr. Jeffries before House leaders joined a confidential briefing with other congressional lawmakers about the relief package, according to a White House official.
The new Republican leader had a busy first day in office. The US House of Representatives convened with much activity, making up for lost time in the chaotic weeks since Mr McCarthy was dismissed nearly a month ago.
Mr Johnson is expected to face a number of issues that have been weighing on many MPs, including aid to Israel and Ukraine, as well as passing a budget for next year.
Hakeem Jeffries said Democrats are “heartbroken” by the latest shooting and stand with the people of Maine in every way possible, including discussing how Congress can address gun violence.
