Putin: Russia-China relations reach 'unprecedented' level

VnExpressVnExpress12/09/2023

President Putin said that relations between Moscow and Beijing had reached an "unprecedented level" and would continue to strengthen.

During a meeting with Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok on September 12, Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the high level of economic and political cooperation between the two countries, stressing that the strong bilateral relationship is reflected in significant achievements in both fields.

"In recent years, relations between Russia and China have reached an unprecedented level in history. Together we will continue to further promote bilateral relations," the Russian president said.

Mr Putin also stressed the importance of personal relations with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who visited Moscow in March.

Russia and China agreed on an “unlimited” strategic partnership in February 2022. The two sides have repeatedly affirmed the strength of their relationship since then, with bilateral trade increasing. China is Russia’s largest trading partner, with trade last year reaching $147 billion, up more than 30% from 2019.

Experts say Russia and China are drawing closer amid growing tensions with the West. Many Western officials say the partnership with China is one of the key factors helping Russia withstand an unprecedented wave of sanctions.

Yuri Ushakov, Russian presidential aide for international affairs, said in July that Putin plans to visit China in October. Putin last visited China in February 2022, for the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics, weeks before Russia launched its campaign in Ukraine. The Kremlin leader also attended the Belt and Road Forum in China in 2017 and 2019.

During Xi's visit to Russia in March, the two leaders hailed a "new era" in bilateral relations and discussed Beijing's proposals to help end the Ukraine conflict.
