(CLO) On February 1, US President Donald Trump announced that Venezuela has agreed to accept all of its citizens who illegally immigrated to the US and is responsible for transporting them back home.
The illegal immigrants from Venezuela include members of the Tren de Aragua gang. The move comes shortly after US special envoy Richard Grenell met with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in Caracas on January 31, bringing back six US citizens detained in Venezuela.
The White House has insisted that Grenell's visit does not mean the US recognizes Maduro as Venezuela's legitimate leader. Relations between the two countries remain tense with sanctions.

After the meeting, President Maduro expressed his desire to continue dialogue with the US. Meanwhile, Mr. Trump considered this a victory in his efforts to force Latin American and Central American countries to accept citizens deported from the US. He affirmed that many other countries have also agreed to accept illegal immigrants deported by the US.
Recently, the US and Colombia also reached an agreement to prevent the risk of a trade war after Colombia agreed to accept military planes carrying deported migrants.
Mexico had previously refused to accept deportation flights from the US but recently agreed to take back migrants who are not Mexican citizens. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Central American countries could reach similar agreements with the US.
Since taking office, Mr. Trump has issued several executive orders to tighten immigration controls, including stepping up deportations of immigrants without legal status.
