When a raging fire engulfed Notre Dame Cathedral on April 15, 2019, the Crown of Thorns was safely protected in a sealed box, along with many other precious relics.
One of Christianity's most sacred and oldest relics, Jesus' Crown of Thorns, will return to Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, five years after it was saved from a devastating fire in a historic fire in 2019.
The Crown of Thorns, a circle of reeds woven and encased in a shimmering gold tube, will officially return to its sacred home on December 13 (local time).
The solemn ceremony will be presided over by the Archbishop of Paris, with the participation of knights and ladies of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, marking an important milestone in the journey to restore Notre Dame Cathedral after the fire disaster.
With a long and mysterious history, the Crown of Thorns was first mentioned in the 5th century by pilgrims to Jerusalem.
By the 10th century, the relic had been transferred to Constantinople (capital of the Eastern Roman Empire), before being received by King Louis IX of France in 1239 and brought to Paris. From there, the Crown of Thorns was kept in Notre Dame Cathedral, then moved to Sainte-Chapelle for protection after a fire.
When a raging fire tore through Notre Dame Cathedral on April 15, 2019, the Crown of Thorns was safely secured in a sealed box, along with many other precious relics. Thanks to the bravery and quick response of the fire brigade, these sacred treasures were saved from the terrible disaster.
From January 10, 2025, the Crown of Thorns will be on public display every Friday until April 18, coinciding with Good Friday.
After that, this relic will continue to be displayed on the first Friday of every month, creating an opportunity for believers and tourists from everywhere to visit and admire a sacred heritage of Christian history./.
