Speech by General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping at the meeting of friendship personalities and young generations of the two countries

Dear General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and Mrs. Ngo Thi Man,

Dear comrades and young people of China and Vietnam,

Hello everyone, it is a pleasure to meet you after 6 years since I visited the beautiful country of Vietnam. When I see your enthusiastic faces, I feel especially happy.

Present at today's meeting are many old friends who have long devoted themselves to the China-Vietnam friendship, as well as new young friends. On behalf of the Chinese Party and State, I would like to send my warm greetings to you.

Yesterday, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and I jointly announced the establishment of the China-Vietnam Community of Shared Future, which has strategic significance, opening a new stage in the development of relations between the two Parties and two countries, China and Vietnam.

Looking back at the past, we share the same aspirations and support each other. The two Parties of China and Vietnam and the people of the two countries are steadfast in their common ideals and trust in the process of fighting for national independence. Our two countries support and help each other.

President Ho Chi Minh spent 12 years in China as a revolutionary and founded the Vietnam Revolutionary Youth Association in Guangzhou and the Vietnam Communist Party in Hong Kong. He also led the Vietnamese revolution in Yunnan and Guangxi for a long time. There was a farmer in Longzhou County, Guangxi Autonomous Region named Nong Qizhen who risked his life to protect President Ho Chi Minh and protect his safety. President Ho Chi Minh once wrote a letter to inform the Vietnamese people in Guangxi. And in 1945, he returned to Vietnam from Guangxi to lead the August Revolution to victory and establish the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

During Vietnam’s struggles against the French and the Americans to save the country, more than 1,400 Chinese martyrs heroically sacrificed their lives and rest in peace on Vietnamese soil. The hospital in Guilin, Guangxi treated more than 5,000 wounded Vietnamese soldiers. The Yutai School trained more than 10,000 students for Vietnam. Vietnam also actively supported the Chinese revolution. General Nguyen Son of Vietnam joined the Guangzhou uprising and participated in the Chinese Red Army’s Long March, becoming a famous “general of two countries”.

The famous verse of President Ho Chi Minh: "The deep love between Vietnam and China / Both comrades and brothers" has been mentioned many times by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and has become an unforgettable memory for the people of the two countries during those difficult and glorious years.

Looking at the present, we persist in our original wishes and win-win cooperation. In establishing the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership over the past 15 years, the two Parties and two countries of China and Vietnam have always adhered to taking the people as the center, striving to promote mutually beneficial cooperation to bring practical benefits to the people of the two countries.

After entering the current new era, the General Secretaries of the two Parties of China and Vietnam have visited each other twice in the same year in 2015 and 2017, strongly leading the stable and healthy development of China-Vietnam relations.

Most recently, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong personally visited the Friendship Border Gate and planted a Friendship tree at the border gate of the two countries. This demonstrates General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's special attention to the China-Vietnam relationship. The two sides have promoted the overall coordinating role of the Steering Committee for Bilateral Cooperation, promoting more than 30 cooperation mechanisms, including: the Bilateral Theory Workshop, the Border Defense Friendship Exchange; the Conference on Crime Prevention and Control Cooperation between the two Ministries of Public Security of the two countries... which took place successfully, promoting the effectiveness of cooperation between the two Parties in leading and managing the country, adding strong momentum to the industrialization and modernization of each country.

China is Vietnam's largest and longest-standing partner. Vietnam is China's largest trading partner in ASEAN and its fourth largest trading partner globally. The opening of the China-Vietnam international train and the start of construction of smart border gates connecting land border gates have been accelerated. Vietnam's high-quality agricultural products, such as lychee, durian, dragon fruit, etc., have been exported to China in large quantities. China's raw materials, machinery, and equipment exported to Vietnam have also increased many times over for the development of Vietnam's manufacturing industry, promoting the improvement of Vietnam's export capacity.

The Cat Linh - Ha Dong elevated railway project built by Chinese enterprises has been put into operation, transporting passengers, facilitating travel for people in Hanoi. Chinese enterprises have also invested in forming the largest solar power industry cluster in Vietnam and have also invested in building many waste-to-energy development projects in localities, meeting the demand for energy, serving the industrialization and modernization in Vietnam. The signing and implementation of the Agreement on cooperation in protecting and exploiting tourism resources of Ban Gioc waterfall (Vietnam) - Duc Thien (China) has been put into pilot operation. Friendship exchanges between the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference of provinces and autonomous regions with the Fatherland Front Committees of 7 provinces sharing the border between the two countries; People's festivals on both sides of the border and other activities were organized in a diverse and lively manner.

Traditional Chinese classics are well-known to many Vietnamese people, and contemporary Chinese television works are also very popular among Vietnamese people. Many Vietnamese pop songs are very popular on Chinese social networks. Vietnamese singers receive a large number of Chinese fans when participating in Chinese entertainment television programs. These effective exchanges and cooperation have enhanced the affection and understanding between the people of the two countries.

Looking to the future, we share, facing a volatile world, I have proposed the view of building a Community of Sharing the Future of Humanity and the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilization Initiative with the goal of promoting countries around the world to join hands to respond to global challenges.

At present, China is promoting the building of a great power and the great cause of modernization with the Chinese style. The modernization with the Chinese style that we are pursuing will not only adhere to the path of peaceful development for China's own sake, but will also adhere to the diplomatic policy of being friendly to neighbors, making friends with neighbors, benefiting neighbors, and tolerating neighbors, so that modernization with the Chinese style will bring more benefits to neighboring countries.

Vietnam is also promoting industrialization and modernization towards the goal of striving for the two milestones of 100 years of the founding of the Party and the founding of the country.

Dear comrades and young people,

The China-Vietnam friendship is founded on the people and the future lies in the youth. I would like to make three wishes. I hope that young people will be the inheritors of the China-Vietnam friendship and contribute to the building of a China-Vietnam Community of Shared Future of strategic significance. China and Vietnam today are moving towards a clear goal, and their socio-economic development proves to the world that the development path chosen by the two countries is completely correct. The two countries will strengthen solidarity and cooperation, which is beneficial to the development of each country's socialist cause. I hope that the intellectuals and scholars of the two countries, especially the young generation, will become pioneers on the path of China-Vietnam friendship, contributing to the realization of each country's 100-year goal and the building of a China-Vietnam Community of Shared Future of strategic significance.

I hope you will be a participant in the revival of Asia-Pacific, contributing to the long-term stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region.

China's reform and opening-up and Vietnam's innovation have achieved great success, not only because of the efforts of each country, but also because they benefit from a peaceful, open and inclusive Asia-Pacific region. The Asia-Pacific region is the common home of the two countries and the source of global economic growth. Openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation are the right path. We should hold high the flag of a Community with a Shared Future, an Asia-Pacific Community that gathers many positive capacities, unites, strives forward, and contributes more to a harmonious and prosperous Asia-Pacific region.

I hope you will be pioneers for the progress of mankind and make persistent efforts to build a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind. Both the Chinese and Vietnamese parties are political parties, based on Marxism, and concerned with the development of the world and mankind. Both China and Vietnam are responsible members of the international community. The two countries should become the core forces to promote the cause of human progress. Building a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind is a grand goal that requires the support of generations to achieve. We should shoulder the responsibility of the times with a broader heart and vision, have a voice to defend international justice and fairness, and contribute to global progress and development.

Dear comrades and young people,

There is a Vietnamese proverb that says: "No matter what anyone says, our hearts are as steady as a tripod." The arduous journey and glorious achievements of the ever-growing socialist cause of our two countries have fully demonstrated that strengthening cooperation and solidarity between China and Vietnam is an important historical experience for us on the path of overcoming all challenges and risks, moving from one victory to another.

Looking to the future, we do not forget our original wishes, together walking on the path of socialism in each country, so that the results of industrialization and modernization will bring more benefits to the people of the two countries, and together contribute more to the cause of human progress.
