On June 6, a workshop on green tourism took place in Hoi An city, Quang Nam province, focusing on the topic "Green tourism destination management model - Stakeholder approach".

The event was organized to enhance public-private cooperation and promote active participation of stakeholders in developing and managing green tourism models according to international standards locally.

Within the framework of the workshop, delegates had a lively discussion on the current situation, challenges and solutions in green tourism management in Quang Nam.

The role of close cooperation between communities, businesses and local management levels is particularly emphasized to improve capacity and effectiveness of sustainable tourism management.

Notably, the orientation of green tourism development in Da Nang (new) after the merger is also an issue that receives great attention from many delegates.

Mr. Van Ba Son, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Nam province, commented that although Quang Nam and Da Nang possess many strengths and opportunities, they also face many challenges after the merger, including management mechanisms, pressure on resources, destinations and the lack of typical tourism products.

Mr. Son emphasized: “There needs to be a systematic roadmap for green tourism development after the merger. The set of green tourism criteria of Quang Nam (issued in 2021) needs to be upgraded to become a set of criteria with international standards. Above all, there needs to be connection and companionship between businesses, management agencies and people to develop sustainable tourism.”

From an international perspective, Mr. Olivier Messmer, Project Team Leader of ST4SD (Swiss Tourism for Sustainable Development in Vietnam), emphasized the importance of destination-specific certification programs, centralized governance mechanisms that strongly empower localities, effective public-private partnerships, and initiatives to protect unique natural values.

Mr. Olivier Messmer affirmed: “Together with the Swiss government, the ST4SD project will continue to support Quang Nam to go further in green tourism, towards sustainable development through the application of international standards and certifications. We highly appreciate the role of public-private partnerships and will do our utmost to help Quang Nam become a leading sustainable tourism destination.”

Regarding the merger prospect, Mr. Messmer commented that despite the challenges, this is also a great opportunity for Quang Nam and Da Nang. The combination of modern and traditional elements will bring more unique experiences to tourists. However, he also noted the need to preserve the unique characteristics of each locality, especially traditional, cultural and historical values.

According to statistics, in 2024, Quang Nam province welcomed more than 8 million visitors, with total social income from tourism estimated at more than 21,600 billion VND. Notably, the number of international visitors reached more than 5.5 million, an increase of 20% compared to 2023, showing the strong development potential of green tourism in the locality.
