Developing a dynamic transport system for Muong Nhe to develop

Muong Nhe (Dien Bien) – the westernmost point of the country – is changing rapidly day by day thanks to advances in transport infrastructure development. From a place of isolated travel and difficult trade, many routes have now been invested in synchronously, opening up great opportunities for socio-economic development in the border area with many difficulties.

Located in the far west of the country, Muong Nhe is a border district with rugged terrain, divided by high mountains and deep streams. The population is mainly ethnic minorities living scatteredly, and travel and exchange of goods have encountered many obstacles over the years. Small dirt roads, prone to landslides in the rainy season, have been a major barrier to economic development and improving people's lives.

Identifying transport infrastructure as a key factor, Muong Nhe district has actively mobilized resources for investment and development. Mr. Ta Van Son, Chairman of Muong Nhe District People's Committee, affirmed:

“We identify the development of transport infrastructure as a breakthrough. The district will continue to mobilize maximum capital sources from target programs, while promoting socialization, creating conditions for people and businesses to participate in infrastructure development.”

Developing transport infrastructure has always been of special concern to Muong Nhe district, as a driving force to help ethnic minorities develop the economy and reduce poverty.

In the period of 2020-2024, through the support capital of the Party and the State, the district has focused on promoting the opening and upgrading of many inter-commune and inter-village traffic routes. The total investment for these projects is up to hundreds of billions of VND, mainly from the national target program and local budget.

Mr. Pham Van Cuong, Head of the Economic - Infrastructure Department of Muong Nhe district, said: Up to now, the whole district has completed and put into use more than 200km of inter-village and inter-commune roads. Some key routes such as Chung Chai - Nam Sin, Nam Ke - remote villages, or Quang Lam - Huoi Nu - Pa My route have created favorable conditions for the transportation of agricultural products, production materials and connecting economic zones.

“These routes not only help people travel conveniently but also contribute to stabilizing the population, promoting production development and maintaining border security,” Mr. Cuong emphasized.

Inter-commune and inter-village roads are repaired every year after the rainy season to facilitate people's travel.

The synchronous investment has contributed to a clear change in the rural appearance of the Muong Nhe border area. Many communes that were once in a particularly difficult situation now have year-round roads. Students no longer have to miss school because of slippery roads; agricultural products are brought to market in a timely manner; medical staff , teachers, and authorities can easily access remote areas.

However, harsh natural conditions remain a significant challenge for local traffic. The rainy season causes many serious landslides, affecting travel and freight transport. Every year, the district still has to allocate tens of billions of VND to maintain and repair key routes to ensure that the traffic "blood" is not interrupted.

To ensure convenient travel for people during the rainy season, the district always arranges machinery and equipment to be on duty 24/7 to handle landslides and avoid daily traffic jams.

Transport development is one of the key tasks in the sustainable development strategy of Muong Nhe district. With the determination of the government and the consensus of the people, the land at the headland of the Fatherland is gradually changing, opening up new development opportunities for the future.
