Developing OCOP products associated with local advantages

Binh Thuan Commune has many advantages in terms of land and climate suitable for developing high-tech agricultural production and focusing on effectively implementing the “One Commune One Product” (OCOP) Program. The commune has implemented many solutions to develop typical products, build brands, increase the value of agricultural products, and promote local economic development.

Currently, Binh Thuan commune has 5 products recognized as meeting 4-star OCOP standards, including: Thu Dan Oolong Tea, Trong Nguyen Tea, Phong Lai Honey, Minh Tri Arabica Coffee and Pha Din Top Tourist Destination, all of which are products that have affirmed their brand and position in the market, and are favored by consumers inside and outside the province.

Visiting the raw material area of Binh Thuan Production, Trading and General Services Cooperative, Kien Xuong village. The tea growing area is more than 10 hectares wide, the air is fresh, the farmers are harvesting young green tea buds.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh, Deputy Director of the Cooperative, introduced: The Cooperative has Trong Nguyen tea products recognized as 4-star OCOP products. Each year, the unit exports 15-20 tons of finished tea to domestic and foreign markets, with a revenue of over 10 billion VND. The raw material area of the Cooperative is produced using organic methods, in order to improve quality and meet export standards. In addition, the Cooperative has invested in a modern tea production line worth more than 10 billion VND, with a capacity of 35 tons/day, which can meet large orders. The Cooperative aims to upgrade Trong Nguyen Tea products to 5-star OCOP quality.

At the foot of the legendary Pha Din Pass, Phong Lai Bee Cooperative is a typical unit with Phong Lai Honey products meeting 4-star OCOP standards. The Cooperative has 13 members with 2,000 bee colonies, mainly Italian and domestic bees; the average yield is 30 kg of honey/colon/year. With the form of natural farming, harvesting and preserving according to the correct process, the output and quality of honey are increasingly improved.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Director of Phong Lai Bee Cooperative, informed: On average, the cooperative harvests 60 tons of honey per year; the unit's honey products are mainly sold on digital platforms and distribution stores. The average annual revenue reaches over 1.5 billion VND. We are supported by specialized agencies to design product packaging, labels, traceability stamps, and complete procedures to be certified as meeting VietGAP standards. At the same time, we participate in displaying and introducing honey products at agricultural fairs and trade promotion events inside and outside the province, which are well received by consumers.

Effectively exploiting existing potentials and strengths, Binh Thuan commune has built solutions to develop and upgrade OCOP products. In particular, striving to maintain and improve the quality of 5 existing 4-star OCOP products; encouraging investors to innovate and apply technical advances in production, processing and product preservation. At the same time, building models for developing raw material areas associated with OCOP products according to the value chain.

Mr. Duong Gia Dinh, Chairman of Binh Thuan Commune People's Committee, said: From now until 2030, the commune strives to have 7 OCOP products, focusing on product groups: Food, medicinal herbs and community tourism. The commune is focusing on improving the capacity of economic entities through training and education on production management, sales skills and application of information technology; developing OCOP products in the direction of meeting market demand; supporting the development of new OCOP standard products associated with local strengths, brand development, traceability, packaging and product packaging.

In addition, the commune encourages enterprises and cooperatives to promote production linkages and form safe agricultural value chains to create highly competitive products in the market. Coordinate with departments, branches and specialized agencies of the province to support entities in strengthening trade promotion activities, connecting supply and demand of OCOP products through fairs and exhibitions in and outside the province; bring products to e-commerce platforms, expand consumption markets and promote products to consumers nationwide.

With the active participation of local authorities, businesses and cooperatives, the OCOP Program in Binh Thuan commune has gradually brought about practical results, contributing to increasing the value of agricultural products and creating sustainable livelihoods for people.
