People in An Dung commune (Duc Tho) raise snakehead fish and square-head perch in ponds and lakes.

Vu Quang town and Tho Dien commune have benefited the most from Ngan Truoi – Cam Trang lake and the surrounding ponds and lakes for freshwater fish farming. In recent years, these two localities have had 285 households raising fish on Ngan Truoi – Cam Trang lake and surrounding ponds and lakes with a total area of about 31 hectares.

Thanks to the clean water flowing from upstream, the water supply is filtered and changed regularly, the water surface is clear, there are many plankton, few diseases, the cage area uses industrial feed for commercial farming... so the productivity here reaches 2 tons/ha/year, higher than the average of the district (1.7 tons/ha/year) and the province (1.57 tons/ha/year). Along with traditional fish species such as grass carp, common carp, bighead carp, monosex tilapia, snakehead fish... some households have boldly invested in raising new species for higher production efficiency.

People in Vu Quang town raise valuable fish species in cages in Ngan Truoi - Cam Trang lake.

Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vu Quang district, Tran Le, informed: “On average, Vu Quang annually cultivates nearly 177 hectares of ponds and lakes, with an output of about 300 tons, for a production value of nearly 11 billion VND. In addition to traditional farming objects, extensive farming, the district also has policies to encourage and support freshwater farming households to boldly borrow capital, apply science and technology, produce in the direction of goods and introduce new species such as: catfish, climbing fish, crispy grass carp, crispy common carp, sturgeon... into production.

Currently, in the Ngan Truoi - Cam Trang reservoir area, there is 1 cooperative, 3 cooperative groups, 6 private households intensively raising 48 cages of high-value fish, each year earning hundreds of millions of VND/model and becoming a place to learn experiences, pilot business, creating a highlight in the picture of freshwater aquaculture in the area.

After many years of raising fish combined with raising geese, ducks but with a profit of only about 30 million VND/ha/year, Mr. Tran Phi Chau (farm owner in Thai Hoa village, Phu Luu commune, Thach Ha district) has gradually changed the farming objects. More than 2 years ago, Mr. Chau boldly domesticated and piloted raising 2/9 ponds (about 1.5 ha) of white-leg shrimp (this species is mainly raised in brackish water) and achieved positive results.

With the motto of "learning while working", "taking profits from shrimp farming", Mr. Chau has now switched to raising white-leg shrimp in 6/9 ponds (about 6 hectares, accounting for 2/3 of the total farm area) in the form of improved extensive farming, with a density of 15 - 30 shrimp/m 2 . Thanks to basic investment in ponds, full electricity and water, choosing good breeds, and providing appropriate amounts of food, each year Mr. Chau produces 2 - 3 crops, selling 10 - 13 tons of commercial shrimp, bringing in profits twice as high as previous fish and poultry farming.

Some freshwater farming households in Phu Luu (Thach Ha) have boldly invested in land, funds, and expanded farming objects to both produce and do business (fishing services, experiences).

After the pearl farming models in Ha Tinh city, Cam Xuyen and some other places were successful, Mr. Ho Phi Thuy (from Thach Van commune, Thach Ha district) boldly invested in pilot farming of mollusks in the pond area of the former Thach Kenh Aquaculture Youth Volunteer Village Project, which has now been handed over to local management.

He started breeding in August 2024, and has now produced 7 ponds (each pond is about 5 hectares). Through monitoring, it shows that pearl oysters in this right bank of the Nghen River are developing quite well, and the ponds that were bred early are about to be implanted with pearls to move to a new farming cycle.

The trend of pearl farming in freshwater ponds and lakes is developing quite well, and has initially shown positive signs. (Photo taken in the farming area of Thach Kenh commune).

Mr. Nguyen Duy Hoang - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thach Kenh Commune (Thach Ha) said: "We are very hopeful for Mr. Thuy's pilot pearl farming model because he has successfully raised pearls in many southern provinces and here the weather conditions, water sources, infrastructure... are evaluated quite well. If successful, the locality will expand the rental area and call on other investors to cover the entire 120 hectares of pond land handed over by the Provincial Youth Union to the commune. Next, we will mobilize freshwater farmers in the area to cooperate with businesses to raise this species to benefit the most from production experience, science and technology, seed sources, consumption markets...".

Ms. Nguyen Thi Duyen - an officer of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Thach Ha district informed: "In addition to taking brackish water aquaculture as the core, the district is also paying attention, directing and supporting freshwater aquaculture households to stabilize production, increase output on the same area unit, diversify farming objects associated with prioritizing the expansion of species with high economic value. This year, the whole district will carry out aquaculture in 670 hectares of freshwater ponds and lakes and strive to achieve an output of 1,006 tons, for a production value of tens of billions of VND".

The pearl farming model of Mr. Tran Dinh Duc in Cam Quang commune (Cam Xuyen) is developing well.

In 2024, the whole province will cultivate 4,662 hectares of freshwater aquaculture, achieving a yield of 1.57 tons/ha, an output of more than 7,320 tons, for a production value of nearly 268 billion VND; this year, we strive to increase the farming area to 4,677 hectares, an output of 7,600 tons, for a value of about 306 billion VND. Currently, in addition to changing the extensive farming form of traditional species such as freshwater fish (carp, grass carp, perch, snakehead fish, monosex tilapia, etc.), giant freshwater prawns, frogs, field crabs, black apple snails, etc., many households in some farming areas have boldly cultivated intensively, improved extensive farming and introduced new species (crispy grass carp, crispy carp, catfish, pearl oysters, etc.) for higher economic value.

With the goal of improving efficiency, ensuring safety and sustainable production in freshwater areas, the agricultural sector of districts, authorities at all levels and farmers across the province are focusing on renovating ponds and lakes, giving priority to investing in upgrading infrastructure, actively applying science and technology, expanding farming objects, controlling the quality of seeds and feed, controlling diseases, etc. Thereby, contributing to ensuring an income of 35 - 50 million VND/ha/year, creating jobs for thousands of workers.
