Throughout history, traditional medicine has accumulated many valuable experiences and treatment methods, both medicinal and non-medicinal. These values have been passed down through generations and are continuously researched and improved to suit modern life. Therefore, traditional medicine not only has cultural and heritage significance, but also opens up opportunities to promote the development of the domestic pharmaceutical industry and international integration.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Vu Khanh - former Director of the Department of Traditional Medicine Management, in order for Vietnamese traditional medicine to develop sustainably and have a foothold in the era of globalization, the core is to standardize the process of producing medicinal herbs, modernize products and protect folk knowledge.

Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Vu Khanh recalls that there was a time when the country lacked traditional medicine. Thanks to the open-door policy and the dynamism of businesses, the Vietnamese pharmaceutical industry has gradually developed, with more modern and safer types of pills, tablets, and prepared drugs. From a lack of medicine, we have been able to produce many highly effective medicines, better serving patients.

In today's "flat world ", to produce competitive medicinal herbs, first of all, it is necessary to have a large scale and standardized process. "If you want to do well, you must have land, varieties, and processes. The varieties must have productivity, the growing area must meet standards, and harvesting must be at the right time to ensure active ingredients. Everything needs to be strictly controlled," said Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Vu Khanh.

The success of traditional medicine lies not only in preserving ancient remedies, but more importantly in turning folk experiences into modern, easy-to-use products with high economic value. "From a medicinal ingredient, we must modernize it so that consumers can easily use it. There must be a processing procedure and a secret recipe. Using medicine is like using soldiers, when the medicinal ingredients are combined correctly, their effectiveness will increase exponentially," Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Vu Khanh likened.

Associate Professor Dr. Pham Vu Khanh said that when the product meets standards and has value, it can be exported, helping people in medicinal plant growing areas escape poverty. However, he also said: "If medicinal plants are grown according to the trend, without an outlet, it will cause waste and environmental pollution. Damaged medicinal plants must be destroyed, and the cost of preservation and treatment is very expensive."

In addition, there needs to be close coordination between businesses, management agencies and scientific agencies to build traditional medicine products that can compete globally. In addition to quality standards, businesses must pay attention to international tastes, develop products that are easy to use, safe and effective, from which they can "sell to Westerners" at high value, returning to support domestic medicinal plant growers.

One issue that Associate Professor Dr. Pham Vu Khanh particularly emphasized is the protection of copyright of folk knowledge. "Many valuable medicinal recipes of ethnic minorities are at risk of being exploited by foreigners if we do not protect them. There needs to be specific policies to preserve and develop this heritage."

According to Associate Professor Dr. Pham Vu Khanh, some models such as the Dao herbal bath cooperative have been initially successful, but still need investment to upgrade products and create a difference. "After bathing, the skin must be smooth and bright, the product must have a beautiful color and a pleasant scent. That is the way for traditional medicine to both preserve the national spirit and integrate into modern industry," Associate Professor Dr. Pham Vu Khanh shared.
