On October 30, Thanh Nhan Hospital announced that its doctors had successfully operated on a case of a giant uterine fibroid weighing nearly 10kg, accompanied by 3 liters of abdominal fluid, a rare and highly complicated case.
The patient is a 50-year-old female, from a poor family background, and is the main breadwinner in the family. Nearly 10 years ago, the patient was diagnosed with uterine fibroids, but due to financial constraints, surgery was postponed and treatment was limited to herbal medicine and tobacco.
Recently, the patient's abdomen grew abnormally large, causing pain in the lower abdomen, poor appetite, and difficulty breathing. When arriving at Thanh Nhan Hospital for examination, the doctor discovered a uterine tumor measuring over 20cm, occupying almost the entire abdomen, pushing up close to the diaphragm, compressing the abdominal organs, causing the patient to have severe pain and difficulty breathing.
Doctor Tran Quyet Thang - Head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, who directly performed the surgery and treatment on the patient, shared that when the patient was admitted to the hospital, the tumor had grown very large, equivalent to a 9-month pregnancy. The tumor compressed the patient's organs, causing chest tightness, difficulty breathing, severe abdominal pain, and pale skin. After consultation, the doctors determined that this was a difficult surgery with a high risk prognosis, so the team had to prepare carefully for anesthesia, resuscitation, blood transfusion, and prevention of complications.
Due to the large size of the tumor, the open midline surgery above and below the navel was chosen to ensure safety. During the surgery, the team discovered that the transverse colon was attached to the uterus, and had to carefully separate it before completely removing the uterus, preserving the two adnexa. The surgery lasted for several hours, the patient lost a significant amount of blood, and was given 2 additional units of blood during the surgery.
After surgery, the patient was conscious, blood pressure was stable, he could eat and drink, post-operative test 1 day showed that hemoglobin increased from 9.5 to 11.2g/dL - good recovery. The tumor weighed more than 9kg, with about 3 liters of abdominal fluid. The sample was sent for pathology to determine the nature of the tumor, expected to be a benign fibroid.
The patient confided: “I knew I had fibroids for a long time, but due to difficulties, having to raise a child who is studying, and taking care of a husband who has lung disease, I did not dare to have surgery. In the past month, my stomach grew rapidly, I was in pain and couldn’t eat or sleep, so I came to the hospital. I came here and was consulted, encouraged, and had surgery by the doctors. After the surgery, I felt much lighter and healthier, and no longer had the pain I had before.”
Doctors recommend that women of reproductive age, pre-menopause and menopause should have regular gynecological examinations, because uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, cervical polyps, etc. often progress silently. If detected early, treatment will be simple and have few complications./.
