This is the second year that Mr. Nguyen Trung Kien's family in Tam Thanh village has harvested Navel oranges, even though it has only been 3 years since grafting this orange variety onto grapefruit roots. Thanks to organic care, more than 1 hectare of oranges has grown well, with large, beautiful, and high-quality fruits. From the beginning of November until now, Mr. Kien has harvested more than 400 kg of Navel oranges, with the total expected output reaching over 20 tons of fruit by the end of the season. With a garden price of 40,000-50,000 VND/kg, his family's orange garden will generate nearly 1 billion VND in revenue.

Mr. Nguyen Trung Kien said: About 1 month before harvesting, the family proactively adjusts the amount of irrigation water, ensuring soil moisture. At the same time, adding potassium and NPK fertilizers stimulates root development, increases the sweetness of the fruit; combined with treating harmful microorganisms with some biological pesticides, ensuring safety.

At Kien Cuong Phieng Khoai Cooperative, there are 18 members growing 40 hectares of Navel oranges, of which 10 hectares are being harvested. Navel oranges are mainly intercropped with other fruit trees, such as: Man Hau plum, Tai Nung pear, crispy persimmon... From the beginning of November, the cooperative's orange gardens have begun to ripen, many traders have come to the gardens to buy at a price of 40-50 thousand VND/kg.

Ms. Dinh Thi May, Deputy Director of Kien Cuong Phieng Khoai Cooperative, said: We aim to produce according to VietGAP standards, most of the area is installed with automatic irrigation system, the entire care process uses organic fertilizers, uses biological pesticides, especially does not use herbicides, ensuring the quality of fruit meets safety standards. In March 2025, the Cooperative's Navel orange product was granted 3-star OCOP certification. Although it is a new fruit tree, it has brought high income to many member households in the Cooperative. In 2024, the highest income household reached more than 1.5 billion VND, the rest each household earned an average of 200-300 million VND/orange crop.

Navel oranges are also known as convex navel oranges, ly oranges originating from Australia, with a rich sweet taste, large fruit, thin skin, juicy segments, seedless and a characteristic aroma. After 3 years of being planted by farmers and cooperatives in Phieng Khoai, it has been shown that the Navel orange variety is suitable for the climate and soil, grows well, the fruit quality is fragrant, delicious, and has a sweeter taste than other orange varieties. Up to now, the whole commune has about 50 hectares, of which 20 hectares have entered the stable harvest period, with a yield of 20-25 tons/ha.

Mr. Nguyen Van Toan, Vice Chairman of Phieng Khoai Commune People's Committee, informed: Currently, the commune is propagating and mobilizing people to expand the orange growing area in a concentrated direction, in accordance with the planning, actively applying science and technology in planting, care, and pest control; prioritizing organic production models and sustainable agriculture to improve product quality; building brands and certifying VietGAP and OCOP standards, attaching QR codes to trace the origin...

Navel oranges bring high income to many farming households in Phieng Khoai commune.

In addition, to help farmers consume and promote their products, Phieng Khoai commune is developing a plan to invite KOLs to livestream sales on social networking platforms TikTok and Facebook. In particular, live streaming from the garden and packaging warehouse. At the same time, connecting shipping units to deliver goods quickly, ensuring product quality when reaching customers.

In 2025, the output of Navel oranges in Phieng Khoai commune is expected to reach about 500 tons. With the current stable selling price and output, orange growers in Phieng Khoai will have a significant source of income. This encourages people to continue investing in care, expanding the area, improving product quality and building the Navel orange brand to become a typical agricultural product, creating sustainable livelihoods for farmers in the border area.
