Currently, Vietnamese theaters have 8 Vietnamese films showing at the same time including "Searching for ambergris", "Grandma's Gold", "Grave Reconstruction", "Party Crash: Mother's Birthday", "Pregnancy and Wealth", "Fight to the Death in the Sky", "Crippled Heart", "Ghost House".
The paradox is that, despite being “crowded”, the box office has fallen into a revenue slump. According to Box Office Vietnam, from the weekend of October 31 to November 2, the total box office revenue only reached 26.6 billion VND - the lowest in 2025. Currently, apart from “The Search for Ambergris” which is temporarily leading the box office because it has just been released, no other Vietnamese films have made it into the Top 5 at the box office, leaving room for foreign titles.
The series failed financially

“Crippled Heart”, a 1990s style film, only grossed a meager 759 million VND, and the film was still caught up in a “storm of losses”.
“Pha dang sinh mo” with the outstanding performance of Hong Anh and the participation of Ngoc Son and the script of screenwriter Binh Bong Bot only earned 5.5 billion VND after a long time of showing. In the most recent weekend, the film only brought in 500 million VND.
The newly released "Thai Chieu Tai" has sunk, only reaching 1.5 billion VND in 3 days of the weekend, with a total revenue of only 2.8 billion VND.
Although "Cải mã" had a good start and was at the top of the charts, it has now fallen out of the top 10, with a total revenue of about 19 billion VND, still unable to recover its investment.
"The Haunted House" was criticized for its "many swear words" dialogue, and only earned over 18 billion VND.
Two Vietnamese films that have been in theaters for a long time, “The Gold of Foreigners” and “The Death Battle in the Sky”, are considered bright spots in terms of revenue. However, the psychological work of Viet Huong and Hong Dao has not yet reached the hundred billion mark.
Many Vietnamese films had poor sales and left theaters early. “Blindfolded Deer Catcher” only earned 759 million VND after 10 days of screening, despite the participation of Bich Ngoc and Luong Gia Huy – actors who participated in “Red Rain”.
Previously, the horror film “Hortar Hill” stopped showing after 9 days, with a revenue of just over 2 billion VND, despite the participation of Hua Vi Van. “Pawn Shop: You Play, You Pay” only earned 153 million VND, and was rated as the worst film of the year when the actors and producers openly fought each other.
The horror film “The Bride Contract” left the theaters with 17 billion VND. “My Hand Holds a Star” with Lee Kwang Soo only earned 11.7 billion VND despite extensive promotion. “I Lift You Up When You Fall” with the participation of stars Le Khanh, Thuan Nguyen, Quoc Truong… stopped at 16 billion VND in revenue.
The trough of Vietnamese cinema and a new ray of hope

After the miracle of “Red Rain” earning over 714 billion VND on September 2nd and setting a box office record along with the “fever” of “Fight to the Death” attracting over 251 billion VND, the Vietnamese film market suddenly fell into an unprecedented gloomy period. 20 Vietnamese films were released in theaters in just the last 3 months of the year but there were no outstanding highlights.
Some film experts predict that this massive situation will cause the market to hit rock bottom in a way that no one expected. That is when Vietnamese films will all lose money due to a lack of screening times, even works with stable quality will be caught up in the common cycle of failure.
In the context of the rise of online platforms, viewers only go to the cinema when they are sure it is “worth the money”. With so many options at their fingertips, Vietnamese films are more vulnerable when they do not have a superior advantage.
“The Search for Ambergris” has now earned over 14 billion VND in revenue, reaching the top 1 at the box office after receiving positive feedback on its quality. The film revolves around a stolen treasure from a coastal village, with the participation of Quang Tuan, Ma Ran Do, Doan Quoc Dam… The film’s occupancy rate is exceptionally high, promising to be a boost for Vietnamese films at the end of the year.
