Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai met with officials and several large US businesses.

On April 4, in Washington DC, right after the conclusion of the 2024 Senior Leadership Program held in Boston, Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai met with Senior Advisor on International Climate Policy John Podesta, Chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers Jared Bernstein, received Deputy Director of the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), attended a Business Dialogue; received the President of the US Semiconductor Association (SIA) and a number of US businesses.

 

According to a VNA correspondent in Washington, at a meeting with Senior Advisor on International Climate Change Policy John Podesta at the White House, Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai affirmed that Vietnam wishes to cooperate with the United States to implement Vietnam's climate commitments within the framework of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) as well as the goal of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050 in line with Vietnam's socio-economic conditions.

 

Mr. Podesta said the United States will continue to increase support for Vietnam in responding to climate change, especially in developing clean energy and transferring renewable energy technology; affirming continued financial and technical assistance to Vietnam through multilateral mechanisms, including JETP.

 

In a discussion with Chairman of the Bernstein Economic Advisory Council, Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai said that after upgrading the relationship to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in September 2023, the two countries will have more space and new momentum for cooperation in many fields.

 

The Deputy Prime Minister said that economic and trade cooperation has increasingly strategic significance and brings specific economic benefits, continuing to be the focus and driving force promoting bilateral relations; he suggested that the two countries continue to concretize and effectively implement the content of the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

 

Mr. Bernstein expressed his satisfaction with the development of Vietnam-US relations, especially in the fields of economics, trade and investment; affirmed that the US will continue to create conditions to further enhance cooperation between the two sides in the coming time.

 

At the meeting with Deputy Director of the US International Development Finance Corporation Nisha Biswal, Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai assessed that DFC's priority areas are consistent with Vietnam's development priorities; believed that DFC and Vietnam still have much room and potential for cooperation, and asked DFC to continue supporting Vietnam in investing in infrastructure, developing renewable energy, promoting science and technology, and innovation.

 

DFC Deputy Director said that after his visit to Vietnam, President Joe Biden asked DFC to expand its operations in Vietnam and DFC is looking to implement this directive.

 

Ms. Biswal said that Vietnam is one of DFC's leading important partners in the region and DFC has recently increased its investment from 15 million to 150 million USD in Vietnam.

 

Ms. Biswal said that many cooperation projects between the two sides have been implemented very effectively and pledged to continue promoting private investment activities in Vietnam.

 

At the Business Forum co-hosted by the US Chamber of Commerce (USCC) and the US-ASEAN Business Council (USABC) with the participation of nearly 30 leading US businesses in the fields of technology, renewable energy, aviation, healthcare, etc., the Deputy Prime Minister highly appreciated US businesses' interest in investing in Vietnam; saying that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework between the two countries will create more favorable conditions for US businesses to invest in Vietnam.

 

President of the US-ASEAN Business Council (USABC) Ted Osius said that USABC had just had a very successful visit to Vietnam; US businesses were very excited after the two countries established a comprehensive strategic partnership; highly appreciated the management of the Vietnamese Government and hoped that the Vietnamese Government would continue to create a more favorable environment, policies and institutions for more and more US businesses, especially in the fields of technology, renewable energy, healthcare, and aviation, to invest and do business in Vietnam.

 

Also at the seminar, Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai and representatives of several Vietnamese ministries and sectors answered specific concerns of businesses in the fields of energy, healthcare, and aviation.

 

At a meeting with President of the US Semiconductor Industry Association John Neffer, Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai highly appreciated SIA's activities in promoting cooperation and developing Vietnam's semiconductor industry; sharing that Vietnam is actively preparing conditions, including building many projects and policies to create a legal corridor to promote cooperation with countries, including the United States.

 

The SIA Chairman appreciated the Vietnamese Government's efforts in facilitating the development of the semiconductor industry and Vietnam's focus on training high-quality human resources and focusing on the transition to renewable energy.

 

Mr. John Neffer hopes that Vietnam will pay more attention to creating more favorable conditions for SIA member enterprises, and commits to continue accompanying Vietnam in the development of the semiconductor industry in the coming time.

 

During private meetings with the Presidents and leaders of several US businesses such as Intel, Dell, Apple and Boeing, the Deputy Prime Minister highly appreciated the investment and business activities of these businesses in Vietnam and said that the Vietnamese Government will create favorable conditions for businesses to expand investment, production and business in Vietnam.

 

US business leaders assessed that in the current context, US businesses are increasingly interested and continue to have a long-term investment and business strategy in Vietnam; assessed Vietnam as one of the most potential markets in the region; thanked the Vietnamese Government for always paying attention and directing ministries, branches and localities to further improve the business environment.
