Parents whose children are studying at Phu Dong Primary School (Binh Phu Ward, Ho Chi Minh City) reported to the Tuoi Tre hotline about the school's "unfairly priced" lunches: "The lunches are very bad, not commensurate with the cost parents paid for one meal."
Previously, in many social media groups, photos of school meals with only white rice and meat were shared and attracted many comments.
"If the meal costs 35,000 - 40,000 VND/child and only has meat and fish, that's too bad. I hope the school organizes meals that are commensurate with the quality and cost that parents pay for their children," commented one account.
Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online, Mr. Nguyen Trung Hieu - Principal of Phu Dong Primary School (Binh Phu Ward, Ho Chi Minh City) - confirmed that there were parents complaining about the school's lunch.
Mr. Hieu said that at the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year, the school invited all parents to visit the students' meals, and could drop by unexpectedly.
"When the school has an open and transparent spirit with the boarding meals, it means that the school has nothing to hide. The school is confident in the way it organizes meals, so it invites parents, even emphasizes that parents can come suddenly so that everything is objective and natural," said Mr. Hieu.
However, when parents came unexpectedly and took pictures of the meal in a bowl containing only white rice and meat, and then posted them on social media, according to teacher Hieu, the pictures did not fully reflect the meal worth 40,000 VND/portion.

Teacher Hieu added: "A meal costs 40,000 VND/student, including rice, salty food, and stir-fried food. And this 40,000 VND includes lunch and snack; plus dessert. The school follows the suggested menu from the school meals to ensure; correct weight, adequate nutrition."
With nearly 1,200 boarding students, the kitchen at Phu Dong Primary School (Binh Phu Ward, Ho Chi Minh City) is an on-campus kitchen, organized by the school, not hired from outside.
Regarding the feedback about the school lunch from parents, Mr. Hieu said that the school has a solution. "By November 24 at the latest, 100% of the school's students will be able to switch to having lunch on stainless steel trays instead of double-layer stainless steel bowls as before. That means the meal will be presented more beautifully, each dish will be divided into boxes on the tray as parents wish," Mr. Hieu informed.
