Transfermarkt statistics show that all 20 Premier League representatives have spent up to 3.76 billion euros on player purchases in the summer transfer market this year.
Why is Barca tightening its belt?
This figure has surpassed a series of transfer records in history. Compared to last season (2.4 billion euros), Premier League teams this year spent up to 50% more money.
And this figure also completely surpasses the old record, set in the summer of 2023. That year, 20 Premier League representatives spent nearly 2.8 billion euros on players. This summer not only exceeded, but also surpassed.
But sadly, other leagues are going in the opposite direction to the Premier League's boom. The second-ranked Serie A spent just over 1 billion euros, followed by the Bundesliga - 648 million euros. Then La Liga (Spain) - 575 million euros, and Ligue 1 (France) - 547 million euros...
The decline of La Liga has disappointed the football world the most. The main reason comes from Barca - the team that almost did not spend money on new players this summer. Barca's only signing was for the goalkeeper position, when they bought goalkeeper Joan Garcia from Espanyol for 25 million euros.
But on the other hand, Barca recouped this money by pushing away a series of reserve players - from veterans like Inigo Martinez, Lenglet to young talents like Torre, Pau Victor...
Despite disappointing the football world, Barca's inactivity in the market this year is understandable. The Camp Nou team has only just escaped bankruptcy thanks to the wise spending efforts of the board of directors over the past 2 seasons.
Last season, Barca was officially "safe" thanks to huge revenue from the Champions League and a series of domestic championships.
But that also means increased expenses to keep the pillars. The most obvious case is Lamine Yamal. From receiving a symbolic salary for a young player, the 18-year-old superstar is now given a contract with a salary of nearly 18 million euros/year, along with a series of other benefits.
Statistics show that Barca currently has 12 stars receiving salaries of more than 10 million euros/year, and their total player salary fund is 220 million euros/year.
Premier League is too rich
Barca tightened their belts, Real Madrid was not much better off, spending only 167 million euros on a "revolutionary" shopping season.
The Bernabeu team did not buy a central midfielder, nor did they buy any superstar for the attack, but only focused on strengthening the defense. It is clear that President Florentino Perez wants to aim for a stable structure instead of building and polishing the brand as before.
Except for the big three Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Barca, the rest of La Liga is really in dire straits. Athletic Bilbao, despite qualifying for the Champions League, has tightened its belts in the transfer market. Real Betis had to wait until the last minute to successfully squeeze Antony's price down to 22 million euros - a figure within their spending range...
Water flows to low places, the money of football village is increasingly pouring into Premier League. That is the inevitable result when the English show that they are really far ahead of other football countries in terms of business, organization, attracting sponsorship...
Except for local fans, neutral fans today have almost nothing to worry about when faced with the choice - watching a "super Sunday" match of the Premier League, or watching other matches of Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A...
Sunderland, despite being a newly promoted team to the Premier League this season, have spent 188 million euros on players - a figure that has stunned all the giants in other leagues. At this rate, the Premier League will soon leave the rest of European football behind.
