On November 3, Auckland City’s official Instagram and Facebook pages were suddenly flooded with pictures of naked women, shocking fans. The incident occurred when dozens of sensitive photos were posted to the team’s story.
For several hours, Auckland City’s account was completely taken over, before all content was removed after more than six hours. Initially, many thought it was a technical error or a mistake in posting, but later suspicions turned to the possibility of a hacker attack.
Auckland City issued a statement confirming a "cybersecurity breach" on both platforms. The club said it was working with the authorities and cybersecurity experts to investigate the cause, and said "the safety and integrity of our official media channels is our top priority." The club also thanked fans for their patience and understanding, and promised to provide more information as the investigation progressed.
The incident surprised the New Zealand football community, as Auckland City is considered one of the country's most exemplary and professional clubs. On social media, the team usually only posts pictures of training sessions, matches, or community activities.
Auckland City are currently fifth in the New Zealand Premier League, with two wins from five games. Despite being a semi-professional side, they made a splash at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, scoring against Boca Juniors in a historic 1-1 draw. Despite losing 10-0 to Bayern Munich and 6-0 to Benfica, the results against the South Americans earned them a $1 million bonus – many times their 2024 revenue (around $488,000 ).
It was a huge financial boost for an amateur team whose players included gym teachers, delivery drivers, even soda vendors and forklift operators. Many players had to take unpaid leave to play in the United States.
