The special relationship between Vietnam and Laos develops strongly and effectively in many fields.

On the afternoon of August 29, 2024, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son received Lao Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune (Pho-xay Khaykhamphi-thun) who came to greet him on the occasion of leading a delegation of the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs to visit and co-chair the 9th Political Consultation between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam and Laos.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son received Lao Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune.

At the meeting, the Lao Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs thanked Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son for taking the time to receive the delegation and warmly congratulated Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bui Thanh Son, leaders of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and all officers and employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam on the occasion of the 79th anniversary of the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the 79th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnamese Diplomatic Service; and at the same time sent his best wishes to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son on the occasion of his being approved by the National Assembly of Vietnam to be appointed Deputy Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son welcomed Lao Deputy Minister Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune who led the Lao Foreign Ministry delegation to Vietnam to co-chair this Political Consultation; expressed his joy at the strong development of the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos in general as well as the close and trusting relationship between the two Foreign Ministries of Vietnam and Laos in particular.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son highly appreciated the Deputy Ministerial-level Political Consultation mechanism between the two Foreign Ministries and suggested that the two Foreign Ministries continue to strengthen information exchange, experience sharing and closer coordination at regional and international forums in the context of increasingly complicated international and regional situations; actively implement the High-level Agreements between the Leaders of the two countries and the Cooperation Agreement between the two Foreign Ministries for the 2021-2025 period to contribute to developing the cooperative relationship between the two countries in an increasingly in-depth, practical and effective manner.

On the same afternoon, at the International Convention Center, Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Do Hung Viet and Lao Deputy Foreign Minister Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune co-chaired the 9th Vietnam - Laos Deputy Foreign Ministers' Political Consultation.

At the meeting, the two sides assessed the overall Vietnam-Laos relationship; expressed their delight at the strong and effective development in many areas of the special Vietnam-Laos relationship in recent times, including the contributions of the two countries' Foreign Ministries in promoting high-level and all-level visits, especially the close coordination, contributing to the successful implementation of the State visit to Laos by President To Lam (July 2024) and the official visit to Vietnam by Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone (January 2024). The two sides agreed to continue to coordinate well in preparing for high-level visits and important bilateral cooperation mechanisms between the two countries in the coming time; at the same time, continue to closely cooperate with ministries, branches and localities of the two countries to promote the implementation of high-level agreements.

Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Do Hung Viet and Lao Deputy Foreign Minister Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune co-chaired the 9th Vietnam - Laos Deputy Foreign Minister-level Political Consultation.

The two Deputy Ministers spent time discussing international and regional issues of mutual concern; they agreed that in the context of the complicated and unpredictable developments in the world and the region, the two sides need to promote the tradition of close coordination and mutual support at international and regional forums, especially the United Nations, ASEAN and sub-regional cooperation mechanisms, especially in strategic issues related to peace and stability in the region. Deputy Minister Do Hung Viet emphasized that Vietnam will continue to closely coordinate and provide maximum support for Laos to successfully assume the role of ASEAN Chair in 2024, thereby contributing to maintaining solidarity and the central role of ASEAN.

On this occasion, the two sides expressed their satisfaction with the close cooperation between the two countries' Foreign Ministries; agreed to continue to effectively implement the Cooperation Agreement between the two Ministries for the 2021-2025 period; regularly maintain and effectively promote the consultation mechanisms at the Ministerial and Deputy Ministerial levels; enhance the exchange of information, professional experience and coordination between the respective units of the two Ministries, especially in policy research, foreign affairs strategy, economic diplomacy, consular affairs, overseas Vietnamese, borders, training and education, etc.

The 9th Political Consultation between the Foreign Ministries of Vietnam and Laos took place in a sincere and frank atmosphere. The two sides agreed to hold the 10th Political Consultation in Laos in 2025.
