According to a report published on December 21, for the first time in history, the military ratio in the UK has dropped to just 2 for every 1,000 people. In the past 12 months, more than 15,000 soldiers are believed to have left the army, despite the Government 's efforts to address the crisis by increasing pay by 6%, the highest increase in 22 years.
In late October, British Defense Secretary John Healey admitted that the British military was well equipped for military operations but not ready for combat. In July, he said the British armed forces were facing major challenges.
The UK Parliament's Defence Committee has previously called on the Government to choose between increasing investment in the military or admitting that properly prioritising operations will reduce the overall number of missions.
