From a wild plant growing in nature, some Cor people in the mountainous region of Tra Bong district ( Quang Ngai province) brought it home to grow. Up to now, wind ginger has become a specialty with a certified trademark protection, a 3-star OCOP product at the provincial level.
Wind ginger (sparrow ginger) is an important spice and medicinal plant in the life of the Cor people in the mountainous areas of Tra Bong district. In recent years, wind ginger has had economic value, increasing income for local people.
Mr. Ho Van Hung (Son Tra commune, Tra Bong district) said: "Wind ginger has a spicy taste, rich aroma and a redder color than plain ginger."
Previously, wild ginger grew in nature, many people brought it home to plant for family use. After traders bought ginger, there were years when the price reached 50,000-60,000 VND/kg, the highest was 100,000 VND/kg, so people began to develop this medicinal plant.

Wind ginger is grown mainly in the communes of the Western region of Tra Bong district, including Son Tra commune, a wind ginger capital. The locality focuses on expanding the ginger growing area to develop the family economy on a larger scale, with a total area of up to 6.5 hectares, with about 45 households participating in ginger growing.
Mr. Pham Hung Thanh, Chairman of Son Tra Commune People's Committee, said: "The entire area is currently being purchased by businesses. The current average yield is 3.5 tons/ha, minus costs, we can earn 50 - 70 million/ha, contributing to hunger eradication and poverty reduction."
The western region of Tra Bong has many suitable soil and climate conditions for ginger to grow. Tra Bong district has included this native plant in the list of priority crops for development. In the communes of Son Tra, Huong Tra, Tra Phong, Tra Xinh, Tra Thanh and Tra Tay, ginger is zoned off for growing on an area of 20 hectares, with the aim of increasing to 25 hectares by 2025 and 30 hectares by 2030.

Wind ginger opens up opportunities for developing specialized areas and preserving indigenous medicinal plants |
Mr. Ngo Van Hoa, Deputy Head of the Economic - Infrastructure Department of Tra Bong district, said: “In the coming time, the Economic - Infrastructure Department of the district, as an advisory body of the District People's Committee, will actively advise on the field of science and technology to bring the ginger brand further. At the same time, improve the quality of packaging and products. From there, introduce and bring products to supermarket channels, improve quality ...”.
Tra Bong wind ginger has now been registered for product certification trademark protection "Tra Bong wind ginger (sparrow ginger)", recognized as a product that meets the 3-star provincial standard of the One Commune One Product OCOP Program.
Developing ginger into a commercial product not only aims to diversify livelihoods and generate income for local people, but also preserves this valuable native plant genetic resource.
