Sultan of Brunei Darussalam Haji Hassanal Bolkiah was born on 15 July 1946 in Brunei (now Bandar Seri Begawan). The Sultan studied in Brunei Darussalam, then continued his studies in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Sultan received officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (United Kingdom) in 1966-1967.
Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah was appointed Crown Prince in 1961 at the age of 15; he was proclaimed Sultan of Brunei Darussalam on 5 October 1967, following the abdication of his father, Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien. He was crowned the 29th Sultan and Head of State of Brunei Darussalam on 1 August 1968.
In 1978, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah led the negotiations with the British Government on changing the status of Brunei Darussalam to that of a sovereign and independent state. The result was the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation between Brunei Darussalam and the United Kingdom, under which the British Government ceased its responsibility for the Foreign and Defence affairs of Brunei Darussalam from 1 January 1984.
The King concurrently holds the positions of Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, Minister of Finance and Economy, and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
