Rattan canes become hot item before parent-teacher conference
While the seller advertises its decorative uses, many humorous comments from parents reveal a more familiar purpose, sparking debate about this one-timeeducational aid.
According to Dan Tri reporter, in just the past few weeks, it is estimated that thousands of rattan canes have been ordered on e-commerce platforms such as Shopee, TikTok...

This phenomenon also coincides with the eve of parent-teacher conferences in many schools across the country.
This number does not include the tens of thousands of units that have been sold before. According to information recorded on Shopee, one store sold up to 7,200 rattan tree combos (4 trees/combo) or another shop surpassed them by selling up to 10,500 combos (3 trees/combo).
The "sold out" situation has even appeared on some stalls, showing the great attraction of this product.

The general characteristics of this item, according to the seller's description, are a common length of 70-80cm, made from natural rattan, flexible, "durable for 10 years", "standard goods without chemicals".
The price is also very affordable, only from 5,000 to 13,000 VND/piece or cheaper when buying in combo, making many people not hesitate to add to cart.
In the product description, shops still introduce products with many safe uses such as home decoration, flower arrangement, handicrafts, pet care or even performing arts props.
However, it is the comments and reviews from buyers that reveal the true function that makes this item so popular, especially during the peak season of parent-teacher conferences.

A series of humorous and meaningful comments appeared below the products: "The shop delivered quickly in time for the final year. Bought it to decorate my child's study corner to give him more motivation to try harder next year"; "The whip is flexible, the whistling sound is pleasant to the ears. Hope to improve the quality of my child's study after the next parent-teacher meeting".
A witty customer said: "I invested in a combo of 3 whips, but I don't know if I'll need the second one after the parent-teacher meeting, haha."

Some parents even shared: "Seeing the whip brings back the fierce memories of childhood. Buying it for the desk, occasionally glancing at it to make the child self-disciplined before receiving the report card."
The debate "spare the rod, spoil the child"
The spread of the trend on social networks and parenting forums has made many people curious to buy it, sometimes just to catch the trend or as a humorous way to relieve stress before an important meeting.
"In the past, the most frightening thing was when a mother came home from a parent-teacher meeting with a whip in her hand. Now, I buy it to look at for fun, but who can bear to hit their child these days?", one commenter shared.
Although most of the comments are humorous, the phenomenon of rattan canes selling well also raises concerns about the concept of "spare the rod and spoil the enemy" that still smolders in a part of society.
Among them, there are many comments strongly opposing this concept.

Ms. Nguyen Phuong Anh, a shop owner selling rattan canes, shared that buyers use rattan canes for many different purposes such as training pets, making handicrafts, arranging flowers, not just for teaching children.
However, she also expressed the view that corporal punishment is not an effective and sustainable educational method in today's era.
Many people think that this product serves violent behavior, e-commerce platforms need to take it down.
A study in the journal Child Development by Harvard University researchers warns that spanking can affect a child's brain development, similar to experiencing more severe forms of violence.
According to the study, children who were spanked had greater neural responses in multiple regions of the prefrontal cortex (PFC), including brain regions that respond to threat signals.

These altered neurological responses can affect decision-making and the handling of situations. Instead, positive parenting methods, based on understanding, listening and accompanying children, are the key to building good relationships and helping children develop comprehensively.
Although it has many entertaining elements, this phenomenon also partly reveals the pressure and anxiety of parents about their children's learning results and sometimes even their concerns in finding suitable educational methods.
