The new parliamentary elections in the European Union (EU) and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member state that shares a border with Ukraine come a week after far-right candidate Calin Georgescu took a surprise lead in the first round of the presidential election.

On November 28, the Romanian Constitutional Court ordered a recount of votes in the first round of the presidential election.

Despite poll numbers in the single digits before the October 24 vote, the landslide victory raised questions about how such a surprise could have happened in the EU and NATO member state.

"The Constitutional Court has unanimously ordered a recount of votes in the November 24 presidential election," the Constitutional Court said in a statement.

Analysts predict Mr Georgescu's victory in the first round will boost the far right in parliamentary elections.

An AtlasIntel poll conducted by the HotNews website also showed that the far-right Alliance for Romanian Solidarity (AUR) is taking first place with 22.4% of the vote, followed by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) with 21.4%.

The second round of Romania's presidential election will take place on December 8.
