Shorten construction time of Quang Ngai expressway project

On the afternoon of October 10, in Quang Ngai province, the Ministry of Transport coordinated with the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province and the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province to organize a launching ceremony for the 100-day emulation campaign to open tunnel 2, part of the XL02 package, and to complete the entire handover of the project site for the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway component, part of the North - South expressway project in the East, phase 2021 - 2025 (phase 2).

100 days to clear tunnel 2

The launching ceremony aims to create a competitive atmosphere, promote the sense of responsibility of officers and employees. At the same time, encourage initiatives, creativity, technical improvements in construction and motivate the team of officers, engineers, workers, and related units to coordinate and organize construction day and night at the construction site. The competition period is from September 22 to December 31.

Mr. Nguyen Tan Dong, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Deo Ca Group, said that the unit committed to digging the 698-meter-long tunnel 2, part of the XL02 package, by December 31. To achieve the goal, the unit has improved the tunnel digging method to shorten the cycle time and increased the number of construction heads from the usual 4 heads to 6 heads, helping to increase the efficiency of machinery and equipment use, reduce labor costs in 4 months, shortening the progress compared to the original plan of digging the 2nd tunnel in April 2024.

Accordingly, when tunnel 2 is dug through, the transportation of materials and equipment to the construction site north of tunnel 3 and south of tunnel 2 will only be about 700m (instead of transporting along the old mountain pass which is 3,600m). This is also a decisive factor in accelerating and ensuring the construction progress of tunnel 3 and contributing to promoting the overall progress of the entire project.

Tunnel 2 belongs to package XL02, Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway

Regarding site clearance, the project has handed over 80.42 km, reaching 91.4%. Of which, Quang Ngai province handed over 53.4 km, reaching 88.5%; Binh Dinh province handed over 27.02 km, reaching 97.5%. Determining site clearance as an important task, Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh provinces also committed to handing over 100% clean site to the investor and construction contractor before December 31, 2023.

Putting innovation into practice

Mr. Dang Van Minh, Chairman of Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee commented: After one year of implementation, the progress of completing site clearance for resettlement for the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway project has been resolutely implemented by Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh provinces, and at the same time committed to directing departments and branches to complete 100% of project clearance before December 31, 2023.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Danh Huy, Deputy Minister of Transport, commended the construction unit for its initiative in shortening the tunnel construction time, applied for the first time in the project.

"It is recommended to promote this initiative to popularize it, not only in tunnel construction projects on the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway but also in the entire North - South expressway project under construction, to shorten progress and save money," said Mr. Huy.

At the launching ceremony, representatives of Project Management Board 2 (investor), Deo Ca Group and local authorities and contractors participating in the project signed a commitment to compete in 100 days to open tunnel 2 under package XL02 and complete the entire handover of the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon component project under the North - South expressway project in the East, phase 2021 - 2025.

The Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon Expressway is 88 km long, passing through the two provinces of Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh. There are 3 tunnels through the mountain (tunnel 1 is 610m long, tunnel 2 is 698m long and tunnel 3 is 3,200m long). Of these, tunnel 3 is the largest tunnel newly built on the North - South Expressway, phase 2. After completion and put into use, tunnel 3 will be the 3rd largest tunnel through the mountain in the country, after Hai Van and Deo Ca tunnels.
