German industrial production rose in January 2025, but exports fell, suggesting the outlook for the euro zone's largest economy remains bleak.
German exports fell 2.5 percent in January 2025 from the previous month, according to data released by the Federal Statistics Office on March 10, compared with a forecast of a 0.5 percent increase in a Reuters poll.
Imports rose 1.2% in January 2025 from the previous month, according to data released.
Germany, Europe's largest economy, is the only G7 country to record a decline in two consecutive years, 2023 and 2024.
In January 2025, Germany recorded a trade surplus of 16.0 billion euros ($17.34 billion), down from 20.7 billion euros in December 2024 and much lower than 25.3 billion euros in January 2024.
Also in January 2025, German exports to EU countries decreased by 4.2% compared to the previous month, while exports to non-EU countries decreased by 0.4%.
The US remained Germany's largest export destination in January, although exports to the US fell 4.2% compared to December 2024.
Meanwhile, German industrial production rose 2.0% in January 2025 from the previous month, according to the Federal Statistics Office. Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast a 1.5% increase.
After adjusting preliminary results, German industrial production fell 1.5% in December 2024 from November, instead of the previously reported 2.4% decline.
Despite the positive January 2025 figure and the upward revision in December 2024 data, a comparison of the latest three months with the previous three months showed that output from November to January was unchanged, reflecting the stagnation of the industrial sector.
