Loyal Vietnam-Russian Federation friendship

The relationship between Vietnam and the Russian Federation has a long-standing traditional foundation, has been nurtured over a long journey of three-quarters of a century and has become a priceless common asset of the two peoples. The young generations of the two countries are shouldering the responsibility of writing new, brighter chapters of the strong friendship and good cooperation between Vietnam and the Russian Federation.

The special affection between the Vietnamese people and the people of the Soviet Union (formerly), as well as the Russian Federation (today), is a shining symbol of solidarity and international friendship.

Soviet experts worked side by side with Vietnam to build important projects, laying the foundation for post-war socio -economic development. Many large economic projects built with the enthusiastic support of the Soviet Union continue to operate effectively today, such as the Hoa Binh Hydroelectric Plant and Thang Long Bridge. In addition, thousands of Vietnamese cadres trained in the Soviet Union have become key cadres and leading experts, making important contributions to the cause of building and defending the socialist Vietnamese Fatherland.

The signing of the Treaty on the Fundamental Principles of Friendly Relations between Vietnam and the Russian Federation in 1994 opened a new stage of development in bilateral relations. This was an important premise for the two countries to establish a Strategic Partnership in 2001 and upgrade it to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2012, aiming to deepen and make the Vietnam-Russian Federation relationship increasingly effective.

Vietnam always considers Russia one of the top priority partners in its foreign policy and wishes to maintain the good traditional relations between the two countries, meeting the interests of the two peoples, contributing to maintaining peace, cooperation and development in the two regions and in the world .

Russian Ambassador to Vietnam Gennady Stepanovich Bezdetko affirmed that Russia prioritizes promoting the strategic partnership with ASEAN, always attaching importance to and wishing to further strengthen the close friendship with Vietnam, one of Russia's key partners in Southeast Asia.

Over the past 75 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the cooperative and friendly relations between Vietnam and the Soviet Union (formerly) and the Russian Federation (nowadays) have always been close, connected and achieved many proud achievements. With the tireless efforts of generations of leaders and people of the two countries, Vietnam and Russia have made great strides on the path of cooperation and development.

In recent times, the traditional friendship and comprehensive strategic partnership have been strongly promoted through the active exchange of delegations and contacts between the two countries’ senior leaders. Many coordination mechanisms have been established and perfected in all areas from diplomacy, security, defense to economy, trade, investment, science, education, etc.

With the attention and facilitation of the two countries' senior leaders, bilateral relations have developed positively in many areas. Despite the impact of the unstable situation in the world and the region, two-way trade turnover in 2024 reached 4.58 billion USD, an increase of 26.1% over the same period in 2023.

Security and defense cooperation has been promoted in many directions and diverse aspects of cooperation, becoming an important pillar in the relationship between the two countries.

Cooperation in education-training and science-technology continues to be maintained within the framework of the Cooperation Committee on Education, Science and Technology, becoming an important direction of cooperation as both countries enter a new era of development.

What makes the close connection between Vietnam and Russia is the close and friendly relationship between the people of the two countries. Vietnamese Ambassador to the Russian Federation Dang Minh Khoi said that more and more Russian people are interested in Vietnam, while many Vietnamese people have special feelings for Russia and love Russian culture. This is an important foundation for the friendship and solidarity between the two peoples to continue to be inherited and promoted by the younger generation.

The 75-year journey of companionship has brought the Vietnam-Russia relationship proud cooperative achievements. On the basis of the sustainable relationship built over the past decades, with the determination and efforts of the leaders and people of the two countries, the traditional friendship and comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and the Russian Federation will certainly reap more achievements, commensurate with the great potential for cooperation between the two countries.
