Syria and Saudi Arabia have agreed to reopen embassies in each other's countries after nearly 10 years of severing relations.
In a statement on May 10, the Syrian Foreign Ministry confirmed that it would reopen its diplomatic mission in Riyadh, emphasizing that the new foreign policy focuses on strengthening "bilateral relations between Arab countries to serve the common action of countries in the region."
Saudi Arabia has also decided to reopen its diplomatic mission in Damascus, just days after Syria was officially reinstated as a member of the Arab League after a decade of suspension.
"Based on the deep ties and common solidarity of the peoples of the Syrian Arab Republic and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and on the basis of the aspirations of the peoples of the two countries... the Syrian Arab Republic has decided to resume the activities of its diplomatic mission in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia," the Syrian Foreign Ministry said.
Riyadh severed ties with Damascus in 2012, shortly after the start of the Syrian civil war, during which Saudi Arabia provided millions of dollars in weapons and equipment to jihadist rebel factions seeking to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad. Saudi officials were among the first to condemn Assad’s handling of anti -government protests at the time, closing the Saudi embassy in Damascus and expelling the Syrian ambassador.
However, following a China-brokered normalization deal between Saudi Arabia and Iran in March, the region has seen renewed efforts to mend ties between the former enemies.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has also voiced its willingness to improve relations with Syria. Tehran and Riyadh have also taken steps to end the conflict in Yemen, which has raged since 2015 and has taken a heavy toll on Yemeni civilians.
On May 7, the foreign ministers of the Arab League (AL) approved a decision to restore Syria's membership in the bloc. The AL suspended Syria's membership after the conflict broke out in the Middle Eastern country in 2011.
